I have seen where stories get merged. I posted a story about the "Iron Man" movie and someone else posted the same thing afterward with a better picture. Do the duplicate articles get knocked off if enough people prune it? I never saw the final word on how to deal with them, so I've been pretty much leaving them alone.

Most times the story will be the same. Yes, different newspapers might have different slants, but show them as a reply to the original article.

I am beginning to think it is a moot point. I have seen a bunch of reposts. Some I commented on, others I have not. All that I've noticed I clicked "prune" but it doesn't apprear anyone (or not enough) is doing likewise. I have yet to see a single repost be pruned.

I'd also ask folks to be a little less clever in headlines--I try to search Plime for stories before I submit them, but I ran right over the one that I duped because the headline wasn't all that helpful.

Another idea might be to have a "merge" feature that puts the dupe as a comment under the original (and perhaps transfers the score, too. I noticed that the shelf life of a story can be very short if the category is popular.

If the story is no longer displayed and someone reposts the story should it be pruned as a duplicate story?

We have the google check of the site, but that isn't a lot of help for very recent posted items.

I even looked at the first one before posting and didnt initially see the two posts were connected. This is going to be inevitable no matter what but I totally agree that higher users should be able to move posts.

In worth, when posts are moved it leaves a note saying moved. In here you could have a note that says 'Added as link to ....... post.' then the moved post deletes itself after a certain amount of time.
Or is this asking for overly long threads repeating the same comments? Hmmmmm.

My suggestion is let higher level members delete the duplicates. Digg.com has members "bury" an article. Perhaps have members over a certain level have the ability to delete, or force the duplicate article to an area where it would be less likely to be seen. The more members that delete, the further it goes.

Imagine this one: William Petersen (the CSI guy) snaps and is arrested for clubbing pigs to death using a sack full of iPods. It gets submitted multiple times to Crime, Television, Technology, and Weird.

Some dupes are going to get through, regardless of any software tool to keep it from happening. Maybe add a new ability to "merge" stories and conversations?

It could work like this: If a user notices a dupe, he flags it. Higher level users have a "flagged" tab where such stories appear, each with a checkbox. Check off the dupes on this page and hit submit (or unflag). That brings you to a page listing all the dupes you've checked. On this page, check off which headline/link/picture/section is most appropriate and hit submit again.

Done. You now have one story, and a link underneath that reads "all related threads." The merged story keeps the same ranking as the highest ranked of the earlier bunch.
