Art is important because...

After an entirely too long and drawn out dispute with someone who I feel is a philistine, I've come to the conclusion that some people just cannot be convinced that art is important.

Some people can't see the forest for the trees. They look at Dali and say "Oh that's a weird painting," and forget about it the moment they look away. Or hear a brilliant song and never remember or care to examine what the writer had to say.

How can this be? How can you not appreciate the importance of the one thing that's left in the world that is free of restraint, the one thing that isn't controlled by something like money or bureaucracy? Art is the only thing I can think of that will always be free.

Your turn:
Art is important to me because...

or help me understand:
Art is not that important because...

Art is important to me because... because without art there would be no farts, no tarts, no bartenders, kids wouldn't be able to watch cartoons and do cartwheels and no one would articulate. :( Art is very important.

I know I'm straying from what is supposed to be commented on in the thread, but to truly determine whether or not art is important, one must know exactly what art is. There are too many definitions of art floating around for me to accurately answer this question. Some say anything is art, others think only what they like is art (something I definitely disagree with), etc.

Personally, I think the word "art" needs a new definition.

Art is only important to the people who connect with it and or created it. I do not think these two necessarily go hand in hand. I believe there are and were great artists who created work they did not personally connect with. I am not speaking strickly of commisions. I'd say that the works of many artists such as Frida Kahlo who suffered from somewhat of a creative compulsion could not have possibly connected to every work on a personal or emotional level. Modern artists like Warhol had MANY people working for them, and while they may have been emotionally connected to a concept were most likely indifferent to an individual work as it may not have even been their hands or mind creating it. Many artists use their work as an emotional outlet, and view finished works as a privy of emotional buildup, something they are happy to be free of. A person who enjoys the art the artist may view as only a dump is not an imbecil, but connects with those spent emotions, as they resonate in themselves or fill a void of emotion they lack. I enjoy art that shows rage, an emotion I rarely allow myself to indulge. While art is VERY important to me, I can see how some people reguard it as an extravagance or superfilous. When I was younger it disturbed me that some people seemed to live their lives happily with no particular inspiriation, as I got older I realized that they are just different people, and that while I may not understand them or what drives them, there is not neccesarily anything wrong with them.

Hey at least it's a serious response.

I don't think art has ever had a definition, and I think that's great. A definition would only limit what can or cannot be considered art. Some kind of art, any kind of art, whatever you think is art, why is it important?

Because what could be considered art determines whether or not it is important, does it not?

To a particular person maybe, just because someone thinks something is bad art doesn't mean it isn't art.

art is the best! and whats great about it there is so many different types, something for everyone, and yes comic books are art, so they count! and what else is great is that everyone can draw and do art, ya dont need to be perfect at it to do art, just have fun and express yourself!
but if you wanna do it as a job, ya gotta be good and work haaaaard. so one thing i hate is when i told people i do illustration, with the convo about it people often said, oh illustration must be easier than other studies, you just have to draw things and thats it, wah!

so yes *ahem* art is good

I agree with that. Perhaps I should rephrase my original question:

Because what could be considered art determines whether or not art itself is important, does it not?

That's my point. I don't know what to consider art, because art has so many definitions; each of which is true to the person holding the definition but maybe not to anyone else.

I can't put it in the response that you asked, but when I was younger, art was everything. I breathed it, I ate it, I crapped it. Art defined who I was.

These days, now that I'm older and weighed down with responsibilities, it's not as important for the simple fact that it doesn't pay the bills nor put food on the table. It's a luxury that I can, on occasion, afford.

Art is important to me because it keeps me sane and from turning into a complete lifeless, working drone. It adds excitement to the monotony which is life.

At least that's how I feel at the moment. Oh, and I guess I can.

I understand what you're saying.
But these "so many definitions" you keep referring to are everyone elses, what is yours? That's the only one that should matter to you, and the one I'm asking about. At the risk of derailment, it's kind of like God, your definition is yours alone.

Art is important to each person in a different way, certain things are art to some and not to others.

While a portrait of a dead president is art to one, the howling sounds of a drunken homeless man wrapped in plastic wrap is art to another...

Art is important, with out art we would all stare at blank walls, and have nothing to watch on TV, our floors would be dirt, and our houses would be caves.

Art is life.

That's something that I have spent some time thinking about. I think it would be easiest to just define art with subcategories in the way Kingdoms are defined by phylums, etc. in biology. Something like Art > Sculpting, Painting, Composing, Writing, etc. (I'm not sure if I can get this point across clearly without visual aid.)

This leaves out things like putting a thousand bananas on a wall or chaining a dog in a corner to starve, but I don't see a problem with that. If that does lead to conflict we can always create a new subcategory to deal with those things. Something like "Statements".

Art is important to me because it allows me to express myself in ways that words or actions cannot describe thoroughly. People have gotten to know me better through my artwork and I have made lifelong friends because of it. Without out I truly would be MAD.
