Art is emotional expression when you feel you have no other outlet, it's pure emotion crafted into something more tangible. I'm an Arts/Graphic Design major, and I want to make it my career. I would love to just be able to create whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted and live comfortably. I could go on about art all day. I do not think these two necessarily go hand in hand. I believe there are and were great artists who created work they did not personally connect with. I am not speaking strickly of commisions. I'd say that the works of many artists such as Frida Kahlo who suffered from somewhat of a creative compulsion could not have possibly connected to every work on a personal or emotional level. Modern artists like Warhol had MANY people working for them, and while they may have been emotionally connected to a concept were most likely indifferent to an individual work as it may not have even been their hands or mind creating it. Many artists use their work as an emotional outlet, and view finished works as a privy of emotional buildup, something they are happy to be free of. A person who enjoys the art the artist may view as only a dump is not an imbecil, but connects with those spent emotions, as they resonate in themselves or fill a void of emotion they lack. I enjoy art that shows rage, an emotion I rarely allow myself to indulge. While art is VERY important to me, I can see how some people reguard it as an extravagance or superfilous. When I was younger it disturbed me that some people seemed to live their lives happily with no particular inspiriation, as I got older I realized that they are just different people, and that while I may not understand them or what drives them, there is not neccesarily anything wrong with them.

Mershaullk @ 5/8/2008 1:13:15 PM

I know I'm straying from what is supposed to be commented on in the thread, but to truly determine whether or not art is important, one must know exactly what art is.
