We saw a car hit her, and we stopped to see if the family was okay. As we were helping them and checking out their car to see if it was drivable (they were bewildered city folk), I noticed the deer in the opposite ditch. She was trying to get up, but her hind legs were shattered and her intestines were starting to pop out of a horrid gash in her side, which I'm assuming was from the broken hood. We had a gun in the truck (this is Saskatchewan, after all), so I loaded it and shot her. I cried so hard, but I knew there was nothing else to do. Anyway, he was in college and I was helping him move back home for the summer (along with his girlfriend and her sister). So we're driving through upstate NY with a full stationwagon and we see this car pulled over on the side of the road with the driver standing behind it waving us down. My uncle decides to slow down and see what he wants. Keep in mind that it is about 11:30 pm on a secluded road in the middle of nowhere, basically.

So the guy turns out to be an older man and he's lost. Realizing that it is kind of a sketchy situation, and so as not to have us think he was up to something, he comes around the driver's side and stays a good distance away from the car and asks for directions to this town called Mount Kisko. The guy is basically standing on the double yellow line in the middle of the road.

My uncle gives him directions and the guy starts repeating them to make sure he's got it. While he's talking, about half way through the directions BAM!... a car coming from the other direction hits him. One second he's there talking and the next he's gone. It took me a good 3 or 4 seconds to realize what I'd just seen.

The chicks in the car were screaming... I was in shock... my uncle is going "HOLY F$#K!" and we all scramble out of the car to see if the guy is still alive. He was. He was very banged up, but he was alive. And then a van came around the bend and ran over his leg and arm and came about 8 inches from running over his head... all this as we're walking over to where he wound up after getting hit the first time. Needless to say, I almost puked.

All this was before the days when everyone had cell phones too. Luckily the van was a shuttle for a mental hospital and had a CB radio and they called for help. The car who hit the guy the first time came back and there were some people in the van so we all fanned out and made sure no other cars came down and got into another accident while we waited for the ambulance and the cops.

The man lived, btw.

clscott645 @ 5/14/2008 10:20:37 AM

I have to drive home often times on a dark rural road and the deer are known for popping out onto the road unexpectedly.

This terrifies me. Right now, we get just about as many deer hit now, as we do in the fall with the rut.

At least in Ohio, our police are very good about dispatching the animals if they are still alive. (my one good police friend due to retire could NEVER shoot a deer....he said he could shoot people, but never a deer)

If you hit one and your car is drivable, they suggest you drive to the station and fill out a report. I have never EVER heard anyone tell anyone to move a deer. Liabilty wise, it would be foolish to tell anyone that. It could still be alive, you think it is dead, and all of a sudden you have an injured motorist on your hands. Their hooves are very sharp! Not to mention the fact that anyone in the road trying to move such a large animal could be distracted in the process and hit by another car. What that lady went thru was insane. Where do you live?

Two yrs ago, I was taking my grandma home from my aunts house as she lives close to me. I saw flashers up ahead, my grammy is riding shotgun and is a total animal freak. She hates that I hunt. She ain't a vegetarian either.

I see a cop with his gun sighting in on something near OUR side of the road and then I see a deer flopping.

I am thinking "Oh s**t, let him kill it before we get up right next to it..." (as it was one lane of traffic now with the cop blocking our lane) Grandma had NO idea there was a deer hit. I prayed she didn't look out the window.

Uh, nope. As soon as we were right next to it, I see the cop waiting for the deer to be still, the deer raises its head up, I hear a pop, (which blessedly grandma is deaf)

She didn't look for some odd reason and didn't hear the shot. I wished I or my kids hadn't seen it though. I pull out of the neighborhood, and I see a car just up the hill slam on their brakes. Then two deer run across the road (from the neighborhood side to the prairie side). The deer make it safely across, and as the lady starts to go again, another deer comes up and essentially trips over the front of her car.

The road is one lane, and there is now a severely injured deer laying in the middle of the other lane (and it's at the top of a hill, so almost impossible to see until you're right on top of it). It's moving its legs, but it's hurt bad. I was in such a shock, I was stopped in the middle of the road screaming "Oh. My. God." The driver, a very elderly woman, gets out of her car, tears streaming down her face, in a panic. On the sidewalk, there is a family of four riding their bikes whose jaws are completely dropped.

I thought she needed help, or at least a hug, so I parked behind her, turned on my hazards, and got out to help her. The family left very quickly. As she called the police (we didn't know what else to do), a car comes the opposite direction and slams in the deer, throwing it behind us into the center lane. At least it was dead then. She's hysterical trying to tell dispatch that she hit a deer, and no she's not injured, but if this deer keeps bouncing all over the road, it might cause an accident.

The emergency dispatcher connects her with some b*tch from animal services who tells the lady to move the deer. The driver is in her sixties, and they wanted her to walk onto a very busy street (with a speed limit of 45) in the dark and drag a dead, heavy deer to the side of the road. At this point, I grab the phone and tell her that's just not possible. She tells me that since she hit it, she oughta move it. When I explain that she's an elderly woman, she says I should do it. I tell her I'm 30 weeks pregnant, to which the b*tch replies "why did you even stop?" She then tells me there's nothing they can do till morning, and that we really shouldn't have bothered emergency services for a dead deer.

Meanwhile, at least three other cars have swiped the deer. I tell the woman that we need to move our cars, as people were going into the middle lane to avoid us, and then hitting the deer. The lady didn't want to leave, but I finally convinced her that it's the safest option. I give her a great big hug and tell her I'm following her home. I got her name and number and told her I'd check on her tomorrow. Poor woman was a mess.

When I came home (about midnight), I see the deer is still in the road, in a different spot than I left it, meaning at least one more person has hit it. It better be gone in the morning, I don't really want to see it again.

Ugh... I wish I could have a drink.
