I had just gone to Sam's Club with my parents to restock the house for the next month or so apparently and I noticed something a bit ridiculous.

We had filled two carts, spent $300, and began the slow crawl to the front door, as a line had already formed.

The reason for this line was a half competent man standing there taking receipts and putting a line on them.

When we arrived to the front of the line I asked just what he was doing. (I have been to these types of stores before and know what they do and their purpose, but I wanted an answer from one of them.)

"Just making sure you are not taking anything out of the store you didn't pay for." he informed

He walked around the two carts, and then marked the small piece of carbon paper I had. I held my head in shame. America, I think we have lost our minds.

Do you some how acquire some type of sonic counting ability and x-ray vision upon getting a job at Sam's Club? How in the hell did this man look through all my s**t in roughly 15 seconds and feel that I indeed did have everything I paid for.

This job is so completely pointless. Its incredibly pointless actually. This guy has the easiest job in the world save for being a weather man and lying all day long, and being that fat lady with the red sweater at dog shows that motions with a finger when you can begin to walk your dog around the ring.

As I exited the shop, I made a semi loud comment, "Wow, good thing he didn't find that Battery powered four wheeler we hid under the strawberries."

Do people actually fall for this scare tactic?

Does Walmart actually expect me to believe that this man with the shoddy mustache and dirty baseball cap with a worn down yellow highlighter is actually saving the corporations tons of cash every year?

...I have to go lie down.

This gets brought up every so often. It isn't just walmart, it is many stores. Obviously it does lessen the amount of unpaid product that leaves the store which helps the multitude of a variety of stores keep their prices down.

Sometimes they will take longer than the 15 seconds to glance at your cart.

Sometimes they are looking for things not in bags, things that you may have accidentally forgotten to ring up.

You don't understand the training that is involved for the personnel that check the receipts at Sam's Club, Costco, Price Club, etc. exits. They are outfitted with ocular scanners that allow them, at a glance, to view all of the merchandise, connect with the mother computer, and verify that everything in the cart has been paid for.

You should be thankful for these people, you ingrate.

I understand that perhaps for a store like Walmart where they bag thigns... but BJ's, Costco's, Sam's Club... there are no bags, they just pile all the s**t in the cart.

I've been going to Costco since before I was born, and they've always done this. It may not totally prevent theft, but it would certainly make it more difficult. I think they're mainly trying to prevent the more blatant forms of shoplifting (eg. walking out with a tv under your arm), but have a policy to check everyone out of fear of a profiling lawsuit.

We go through the same thing at Costco on our every other month run.

They mostly just take the receipt and draw a line across it. They must not trust their cashiers because I really don't know how you would get out without really paying for anything.

I think that bundle of bulk paper towels under my shirt would look pretty darn obvious.

It is just a "presence" type of thing. If you know you are going to be checked upon leaving, you are less likely to try and steal something. If you are a professional, then this shouldn't deter you, but if you are an amateur, this is a good thing. It has nothing to do with trusting the cashier, it has everything to do with not trusting YOU!

hijack warning!

Thanks and STFU! Srsly. For those of us who fly on a regular basis this is not something we like to think about. Last week a TSA monkey asked what it would take to get me to smile, I told Mr Moron my smile was in the bin with my pink sparkly sandals, ready to be xray. (because terrorists always wear pink shoes!)

Usually they're just checking for the more expensive stuff, or anything that would stand out.. I know Costco sells tv's and other electronic stuff as well, at least where I live.. Even when I worked at best buy checking receipts I would jsut look for the tv's or cameras or to make sure they didn;t have security devices still attached around them or something..
-Even if I found something small that wasnt on the receipt I still let people keep it.. thats waht our shrink budget is for, lol
