Regularly sleeping 10+ hours a night?

Since I was a kid, I have been a 12-hour sleeper. Lately I've been doing 11. It's when my body naturally decides to wake up. I hate having less awake hours to accomplish things, but it's how I am. I'm not lazy, I don't wake up and then decide to sleep in, it's just how my body works. If I've had an exceptionally straining day, I might even sleep 15 hours.

I don't know why I'm this way and I don't know of anyone else like this.

So. Does anyone have any ideas as to what causes this, and, do you or someone you know sleep like this?

It might help to add that I'm not a bit depressed and I don't have a life that I like to avoid.

Everyone is different. On average, people need about 7-8 hours a night. But some people need more, some need less. I can only sleep about 5 hours a night. Zapp needs 10. And my kids are wide awake at 6 am regardless of when they went to bed.

There's nothing wrong with you, as long as you're sleeping doesn't interfere with work and life.

And as a side note, when you and Zack do pop out a little one, say goodbye to 10+ hours. You'll be lucky if you get 10 hours between the two of you!

When I was in my late teens and early twenties I would regularly stay up until 3 or 4AM and then sleep until 3 or 4PM.

Now that I'm in my >39s I can barely make it past 11PM and I will wake up no later than 7AM no matter how tired I am.

You enjoy sleeping, and as SparklyEyedGirl said, everyone is different.

When I was your age, I wouldn't sleep 12 hours a day, every day, but left to my own devices, I could certainly do it (or more), and enjoyed it. I even preferred second or third shift jobs just so I could sleep more.

Now, 15 years later, I can't sleep that long. I'm extremely sore if I sleep more than 10 hours, and 7 or 8 is the norm. I suspect in another 15-20 years, I'll be sleeping 5-6 hours a night.

You may be different but I think most people sleep less and less as they age. So, enjoy it now. :)

Edit to add: Yep, see, like Bandit, getting older takes care of that. I can still sleep in, on the weekends, but I haven't slept 12 hours straight in a very long time.

have you ever had issues with your iron levels? i think iron deficiencies can cause you to be more tired. (unless i'm confusing that with something else).

Try telling that to Maddison, she will go to bed around 8 pm sleep until 7-8 am wake up have some breakfast then go back to sleep until around 10. Claire also enjoys this luxury of a long lie whereas I have to get up and go to work.

Myself I find it harder and harder to stay up late at night. I always used to be a night time person and could easily get by on as little as 4 hours sleep but mid 30s has hit me hard and now I'm a wreck without at least 8 hours.

I think that as long as you feel fine with the amount you sleep and it doesn't afeect your job or life then sleep away.

When you are a baby you require a lot of sleep, even tho sometimes the little nippers don't. When you are a kid you require about 12 hours a night. As a teen you require a lot because of all the changes. As an adult, it's a need thing. Your body knows when it is rested. Enjoy those 10+ hour nights, because the day you decide to have kids it will be very different from that.

edit: Maddison will give up that morning snooze before long. Claire is very lucky. I never had that luxury. My oldest wakes up at ten to six most mornings no matter what time she goes to bed, middle sleeps longer, baby gets up around 7 most days. But 1st and 3rd children were colicky. No sleep when that happens.

I wish I could sleep for more than 6 or 7 hours.

I used to get 8 or 9 every night until about a 6 months ago.

Then it just switched to 6 or 7 and has been that way ever since.

Oh the whole people get too little sleep. I'm like you, INY, I just keep sleeping. But since I have a busy schedule I have keep the sleep under 8 hours.

It used to be, before the advent of electricity that most people would sleep 10 hours a night (or something like that).

I usually sleep around 5-6 hours a night due to insomnia( I am completely unable to fall asleep before 1 am at the earliest), but it doesn't really seem to cause me any trouble, I still even have some quite vivid dreams, despite what I have been told by sleep experts about how long it takes to get to R.E.M. sleep.

It is my personal belief that everyone needs a different amount of sleep and that it can change throughout your life that you need. (this is not based on anything scientific)

What is this 'sleep' you speak of? If I get 4 hours in a row it's some kind of record.

If I slept 12 hours in a row, it would mean I was horribly, horribly sick.

6 hours is pretty average for me.

I work two jobs and get an average of 6-7 hours. It's plenty, anyone will sleep however long they're used to sleeping. The question is whether or not you're willing to make an effort to change that habit when it becomes a necessity. If she wants what you want, she should be just as willing as you are to work for it.
