A group of Muslims are making demands and threats that their religious holidays be recognized as official school holidays. Bloomberg is trying to stand up to them stating the logical problem of adding every religious holiday to the school calendar. That and the school holidays are not really "christian" in celebration. The stress of catching up on school work, rescheduling exams and having to ask for special permission to miss classes for the holidays is a routine Muslim students shouldn't have to go through, Hassan said.
Really? What about people from one of these religons? What about a religion that isn't on that list?

Sorry. You can not give every holiday possible. There wouldn't be any school days at all.

Also, as stated, there really aren't any Christian holidays. There is christmas but that has become a secular holiday. Schools aren't out to celebrate Christ's birth. Easter sunday, Good Friday, Ash Wednesday, etc, are usually not official holidays.

Those who celebrate those holidays can ask for permission to get those days off and may have to deal with "the stress of catching up on school work and rescheduling exams"


Robert Jackson one of the politician calling for protests, legal actions or what ever justified it with this:

“There was a situation about two or three years ago where they held a big exam on one of the highest holy days and parents had to make a choice: Do I send my kids in to take this exam or do we celebrate our religious holiday? That should not be the case. It doesn’t happen on Christmas, it doesn’t happen on Easter, it doesn’t happen on other major religious holidays.”
Simple, the kid gets permission to take the exam on a different holiday.

And really mr Jackson, Easter Sunday. That is your justification. You do know that there isn't school on Sundays?

This problem has an easy solution... Abolish all religious holidays...

But seriously... what the hell were they going to expect by coming into a country where Islam is not the major religion?

Easy. Just schedule one of the two dozen 'teacher work days' in conjunction with the various holidays. You can then make a deal with staff if they want/need of for their personal beliefs.

This is just a scheduling situation. If an exam is scheduled on a high holy day, the student can ask to take it another day. You can't accommodate all of the religions of the world.

And yes, majority rules.

I agree that just keeping your kids home is the best idea. My father grew up in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood and he loved the Jewish holidays when so few kids came to school the teacher would let them goof off all day.
Interestingly enough, where I live we get all the holidays for both Christians and Muslims. The Private Christian schools take the Muslim holidays as an excuse to go to the beach.
