How exactly does one estimate the number of bees in a swarm? Was there a bee expert onboard that looked out the window and said... yep, we must've sucked in 20,000 of them!
Actually that is probably very close to the truth. I would imagine that a beekeeper would be able to estimate the size of a swarm from a visual inspection.
And bee types are not as rare as one might expect. In the small town I grew up in there was at least two people with their own (multiple) backyard nest boxes.
