Do ants have low self esteem?
Do ants have low self esteem?
Scientists have been studying how ants behave in colonies and have found that they willingly plug "potholes" with their bodies, testing the holes first to see what size ant is needed, then allowing the colony to march right over them for the greater good! picked by BrownTrout 2 years ago

Ants are the most amazing creatures. I saw a program about them a few weeks ago and actually watched it again a couple of days later.

Not long after the program, there was a lone ant crawling around on the dashboard of my bf's car while we were driving on the highway. I felt so sorry for it since it had lost the chemical trail that ants lay down to find their way.

My mother, if she found one in the kitchen (rarely), would always open the back door and put it out in the yard. I try to follow that lead with ants, ladybugs and spiders too.

Yeah, it's really sad when there is one all by itself that was inadvertantly transported far from its colony and will likely never find the trail home. The poor little guy; lost and alone in a big strange world.

That's why I just stomp the s**t out of the ones that make it into the house.

Anyone else freaked out by how long the legs are of the ants in those pictures?
They look much more like 6-legged spiders!

Hey kids... here's a science project for you.

Ants traveling along in a straight line aren't actually looking at the ant in front of them, they're following a scent (pheromone) laid down by scouts (previous ants blazing the trail).

Take your finger and rub hard across the path they are following (a couple of inches wide should do). You end up breaking the scent trail and they'll become disoriented and scatter off into various directions until one of them picks it up again.

Yeah, I would be the "plug ant" for sure.

I hope I don't come back as an ant.

I'm with you, Suebe. Except for cockroaches. I draw the line there and will always smash them.

Yikes I hate hate hate roaches. My first apartment was infested with them. I still have nightmares about it (and that was a long long long time ago)

Dr Powell said: "Broadly, our research demonstrates that a simple but highly specialised behaviour performed by a minority of ant workers can improve the performance of the majority, resulting in a clear benefit for the society as a whole."
Sometimes I wish human society would exhibit just a teeny-weeny bit of behaviour like that...

I've got the same feeling towards cockroaches, even though I'm aware they are MUCH cleaner than (for instance) flies. Must be something to do with the furtive way they scurry around, like little insect criminals afraid of being spotted by the exterminator police...

I didn't consider my roaches clean at all. Nothing like having to "bomb" your apartment weekly and they kept returning. I don't know why they liked me so much - there was never any food around (I was just 21 and broke).

I remember dozens of little roaches scurrying for cover when opening desk drawers while I was doing National Service in the army ... there were only papers and some scattered crumbs in there and that seemed to be enough to keep them going.

Just opening a desk drawer made them move faster than a squad of soldiers reacting to the voice of our corporal, if somewhat less organised...
