Reform Math
Remember when there was only one right answer to a math problem? Not anymore.

I hated having to remember all the formulas and stuff. All those things I don't even use now.

Yeah, but teaching kids to estimate instead of getting the actual answers dumbs them down. Really quite sad.

Yes, I agree. I also remember an article about wanting to change the way we spell things. They want to make spelling according to how we pronouce a word.

I can see "reform math" as an adjunct to teaching traditional math. Without traditional math (my least favorite subject in school, but I always did well), you can't do well in so many other ways. Reform math should not be offered to young children. Maybe as an elective in high school.

Oh man, i thought if anything they should start teaching more structured math earlier! if they do not provide a found basis on which to grow, they cannot expect kids to continue on to further maths.

"If the derivative of f(x) is between 25 and 28, what is f(x)?"

All I know is that if I started giving a "reasonably close" amount of change back to my customers, I would be fired in a week. Reform math isn't saying, "Approximate the graph of y=x^3π," according to the article. It's saying, "Approximate 25+5." There are times when you don't need an exact number, this is true, but how are these kids supposed to come to the reasonable answer if they have no idea what the correct answer should be? Also, who determines reasonable? If I said 25+5=20, is that reasonable? It's the perfectly right answer for a different sign, but it shows a complete and utter lack of ability to add.
