This is art? Chicago art gallery sponsors interactive exhibit - "Shoot the Iraqi"
Iraqi born Wafaa Bilal sits in self imposed isolation in a Chicago art gallery. Internet visitors can observe him and fight for control of a paintball gun - Bilal has been shot at over 40,000 times since the exhibit began. Take a look (or a shot) here picked by BrownTrout 2 years ago

Bizarre.

I was going to try to purposely shoot away from him, but the gun is damn near impossible to get control of.

This guy is nuts! You can see and hear the paintballs going off as he is doing his video blog.

This is him on day one, explaining the whole thing (in between shots)

I get the fealing that this would catch on even without the "Iraqi" theme.

[Sarcasm]Remember, with Saddam gone, Iraq is an Ally[/sarcasm]

Seriously though, I generally don't go for performance art, but this guy seems to be worth keeping an eye on.

I admit to not watching all the attached video (I have a problem with videos in comments not playing, and cut/paste to a new tab is a pain.)

Is there significance in the fact that all the paintballs are yellow? Or did it just happen to be a yellow day when they took the picture?

I watched several of his blog entries and the paintballs are all yellow. Maybe he got a volume discount or something.

I think it is pretty twisted that someone hacked his system and fired over 20,000 shots in 24 hours. Doesn't say much about society, eh?

Says a whole bunch about our society. I would hope mostly about frustration, and this being a way to let it out. However, I am afraid it says something far less appealing.

It wasn't hacked.
It appeared on the front page of Digg.

The article says otherwise...

When the project was linked to on the popular communal news site Digg.com, someone hacked into the gallery’s server and fired the gun 20,000 times in 24 hours.

I'd shoot him, Damn performance artist's are just asking for it. If he was a mime I'd shoot him every day with my morning coffee and paper.

Now you're talking... mimes are a whole different story!

Didn't see your post Autumn.

I don't think this is a dupe since it adds a lot more information to the story.

Your story was posted when he was getting ready to start his project. This link talks about his experience several weeks into it.

I voted your link up though. :)

Thanks, BT. I didn't say it's a dupe because I know yours have more content. Just wanted to say I posted also.

"The yellow of the paintballs, he says, was a deliberate choice, meant to echo the yellow “Support Our Troops” ribbons."

Not really sure how this can be classified as "Art." Not really a "Political Statement," either. "Stupid" seems pretty appropriate, though.

It doesn't matter if he was Arab, Japanese, or east Icelandic. Regardless of your own race, if you give people a paintball gun and say "Shoot me if you want," you can pretty much know what's going to happen. This just doesn't seem like a racism thing to me.
