But the technology goes back a lot further than 1982, when Tron was released. The frame-by-frame movements of the film camera were regulated with a computer (similar to the kind used for CNC manufacturing), but the finished product was only simulated CGI.<br/><br/>On the other hand, soon after this there was the movie Westworld, which was the first to modify a filmed moving image with a [mainframe] computer to create the visualization of a robot's POV. <br/><br/>Interestingly, both The Andromeda Strain and Westworld were written by Michael Crichton.
