"Tobacco addiction is a global epidemic that is increasingly ravaging countries and regions that can least afford its toll of disability, disease, lost productivity and death."

This reads more like something that strikes beyond people's control (tornado, the plague, etc). As a former smoker myself, it is a choice people make, not really something that "happens" to them. Again, where is the accountability of the individual?

As nice a sentiment as it is, I don't think No Tobacoo Day will do much better than the national boycott on gas that was called for on May 15th.

I quit smoking about 7 years ago (Cold turkey). I think it should be a constant reminder that smoking is 'stoopid!'. Inhaling burning vegetation can't be good.

Smoking is really really stoopid. I quit for 12 years then started up again when my late partner got sick-yeah real smart, someone gets the big C (not from smoking) and you start smoking again.

I just filled a prescription (not covered by my Rx insurance) for a new stop smoking drug. I'm plotting my final stop smoking effort now.

With me...it's not just the ads. It's more seeing the "New Lepers" standing in the rain, outside their workplace, sucking down death.

I know. I became one of those again and I'm so pissed off at myself. I'm planning, have had hypnosis, done the patch, and this time it's gonna work.

Thank you. The Rx was $128. That's about the price of 2 cartons of smokes in NY. I'm determined to stop this poison this time around.

I started smoking at 13, quitted 5 years ago.

We set aside in the budget the money saved for me not smoking every month, and it covered the difference between the rent we were paying for a condo and the mortgage payments of twice as big house we had built for us the summer I quitted.

When we moved over here we sold our house, and got about 30% profit. The house we bought over here costed less than twice that profit.

In that sense, quitting seems like a good idea.

The last time I quit, the cost of 2 packs a day (my consumption at the time) was about $5. Every day, I took a $5 bill and put it in a velvet pouch in a floral patterned box. It was a ceremony I performed every day.

If I didn't have a $5 bill, the next denomination went in the box, no change allowed.

A few months later I had $1,200, went on a splendid smoke free vacation!

/I am going to beat this for real this time.
