Wal-Mart Cashier Fired For Lame Joke
Wal-Mart Cashier Fired For Lame Joke
David Noordewier joked on his MySpace page that if someone dropped bombs on the company stores, the average IQ of the human race would go up - and Wal-Mart fired him because they interpreted the joke as a threat. Kind of proves his point, doesn't it? picked by VooDooPeacock 1 year ago

Isn't there a law that prevent companies for firing people based upon their speech outside the company ?

Maybe in some states, but I doubt it.
Here in Virginia, you can be fired for any or no reason at any time without notice.

No. It's quite the opposite.

Consider: would you want to can an employee who did nothing with their free time but publish Klan materials? Would you be happy with the government preventing you from firing that person - a person who was tarnishing your reputation?

He's better off, out from under the thumb or all that is wrong with everything. Walmart is better off having one less employee with a brain (though not a funny one) and the opportunity to replace him with another overweight, under-insured, uneducated, robot fueled by Frito-Lay, Nascar, and Coca-Cola.

I worked at Wal Mart for years. Getting a pat-on-the-back letter from the president of Wal Mart? They do it so you feel good about yourself, but it's not something to be proud of. That said, this is another example of ridiculous company politics...

People drop bombs at Walmart all the time and nobody complains except the employees that have to clean the bathrooms.

If he filed a wronful termination claim, he might have a chance...if the "threat" thing wasn't their defense. Anytime an employer can say they feel someone is a threat in the work environment (even if nobody agrees), it's a done deal.

You're referring to the "At Will" law. Yes, an employer can fire someone at any time for any reason; however, that doesn't mean they can't be sued for (and lose) wrongful termination.

Noordewier said store officials had him sign an acknowledgment that he was fired for "gross misconduct _ integrity issue."
Too bad he signed that. Is that normal procedure? Is it standard in the States to sign off why you were fired? I would have told them to go blow it out their...!
