Happy Birthday Mr. Heinlein
Happy Birthday Mr. Heinlein
The Grandmaster who introduced us to Lazarus Long, taught us to Grok and showed us that TANSAAFL was born 100 years ago today. He passed in '88 but will be fondly remembered for generations to come. picked by 2manyusernames 1 year ago

My absolute favorite sci fi author. I have read and own all of his works. It all started with me in high school when my boyfriend gave me a copy of "Stranger in a Strange Land" - annotated with little love notes to me (everyone say awww, now).

I was devastated when he passed away.

Edited to add: grok is part of my everyday vocabulary and TANSTAAFL was an old username of mine.

YAY! I'm not into sci-fi at all. I hate Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. I just don't get it.

However, I love Heinlein's books. I've read and re-read them all countless times. Time Enough For Love should be required reading. I know Stranger In A Strange Land is his most well known, but TEFL is by far his best, imo.

Thanks!

I have read Time Enough for Love easily a dozen times. I finally had to get the hardcover, since the paperback was falling apart.

I hope you are not basing your opinion of science fiction on Star Wars/Star Trek. As you suggested in your comments on Heinlein there is really great science-fiction out there.

Star Trek, Star Wars, etc, are movies. They are only science fiction in that they have guns that shoot light beams instead of bullets.

Visit your local library and delve into some of the great novels and short stories that science fiction has to offer.

heh...no, I didn't mean to imply that. I was referring to stuff in the same vein as SW & ST.
I won't go into how much I loathe that stuff because I don't want to offend those that like it.

You sound like those old commercials! ;-)

I average a book a week in my reading, so I'm not that in the dark on what's out there. I have a short list of favs and Heinlein is on it, that's all. I've read and enjoyed plenty of other sci-fi, he's just the best at it, for me.

Starship Troopers was required reading when I was in the Marine Corps.

The movie sucked. Other than the character names and the enemy being "bugs" the story was completely different.
