I find that Tivo, or any recording device works wonders. Pick the shows you want to watch to record, forget about them, and then when you have the time to watch some TV, watch your shows.

That way you don't have to make an appointment with your TV, you won't watch crap before or after your show, and you tend to only watch when you have the time, not when your bored.
