What a horrible tragedy. I love dogs but I know what my decision would be on putting that thing down.

Those poor parents.
I recommend crate training to anyone I know who gets a new dog. Especially if they have young kids. A dog crate is indispensable for house breaking, keeping your kids safe when you can't supervise (like at night when everyone is asleep), or dealing with two dogs when one of them is dog-aggressive.

It doesn't really apply to this story, though, since they thought the dog was outside. It's just a tragedy.

I have absolutely no comprehension on what that family is going through.

I'd put that dog down myself. For those who've held a 2-week-old baby, there is nothing more delicate or precious.

Normally with stories where a dog attacked someone you can't help but feel that stupidity was the biggest factor, but not in this case. They seem like they were doing things sensibly to reintroduce the dog to the household.

I can't help but feel though that on top of the tragedy of losing their child, the loss of a pet of five years will be extremely traumatic too, and this is possibly why the dog has not been put down yet.

maybe, but can you live with a dog that killed your child?
