As a happily married man I have no earthly idea how two people can get married and not want to live with each other.
So you have two different decorating styles? So what, find ways to compromise. You don't want to give up your downtown digs? I mean seriously, holding onto two New York City apartments, rent control or not, is really not a good solution.
Have seperate bedrooms if you can't stand sleeping with someone every night. Decorate it they way you want.
All this article makes me think of the main couple is that they are both selfish, especially the father, who just isn't there 3-4 nights a week.
As a happily married woman I can definately see how this arrangement could work.
If you are both strongly independent it can be so hard to be with each other all the time. I love nothing more than for my husband to go out of town for a week or three.
We get along so much better then. Our phone conversations are more meaningful and the time apart makes us appreciate each other more.
And when he does come back? It's absolute bliss for a few days. Then his dirty dishes and towels on the floor drive me nuts, while my silence and general chaotic messiness make him crazy. All of sudden we're snapping at each other and both looking forward to the next trip.
I wouldn't want to be married to anyone else and I love him dearly, but if we had to live apart I know we would be just fine with the arrangement.
Oh, and my parents lived this way from the time I turned ten and it's only at their retirement that they are back under one roof.
It works for some people, don't be quick to judge.
I can definitely see this working for people, and I'm also happily married. Do I like being married to my husband, sleeping with him, spending time with him, and raising a daughter with him? Absolutely. Do I always enjoy living with him? Absolutely not. It would be nice to have a separate house to retreat to sometimes when his crappy movies, car parts on the table, and dirty dishes make me want to kick him in the ass. I'm sure he feels the same way about my scattered papers, b***hiness, and loud oldies music. C'est la vie.
I thought Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's living arrangements were pretty cool: two houses joined by a walk way.
