Can lobsters feel pain?
Can lobsters feel pain?
It looks like they can. So dropping them in a pan of boiling water may be a bad thing. picked by pocksucket 11 months ago

That's news? there are very few animals that cannot feel paint, and lobsters certainly wouldn't be one of them.

I'm agreeing or disagreeing with this article, but the study seems flawed. You have acid put on them that is eating at them. Of course they are going to want to get it off. If something is damaging you whether you feel pain or not you are going to want to get it off.

How would they know it is damaging if they do not have a central nervous system?

It is quite difficult to determine if they feel pain.

You can detect that they feel pressure, that they sense contact, but how can you measure the response to the pressure?

They are not saying they do not have a central nervous system. They are trying to prove that their central nervous system is advanced enough to feel pain.

Alton Brown on Good Eats puts his lobsters in the fridge to numb them before throwing them in the boiling pot. He says its more humane.

I do not care for these tests. They seem rather cruel.

When I was a kid my mother bought live lobsters at the coast to cook for a special occasion and learned the hard way that you have to drop the head first into the boiling water.
She dropped them in a$$ first, and let me tell you - the scritch-scritch-scritch of lobster claws against a steel pot is hauntingly hair-raising.

I love that show. I don't get why this is supposed to be a big surprise. An animal with a nervous system that feels things? GASP!

The claim will add weight to campaigns by animal rights organisations which protest against lobsters being boiled alive.
I've never seen a PETA poster talking about lobsters being treated cruelly. o.O

What we perceive as pain is simply a message sent to our brains, the nerves exclaiming, "DUDE! NOT GOOD!"

In order to force the body to comply our brain gives us the sensation of pain. This makes us highly motivated to respond and eliminate the cause of the message.

I can't be argued that animals have these same types of messages so that they too can evade danger.

It is very much up in the air as the whether animal brains use discomfort type responses (pain) to get the animal to comply. A lot of processing in the animal brain is very low level, doesn't require a conscious thought process, so it could just be that the lobster brains are telling their lobster bodies to move without consulting with any type of lobster psyche.

Disgusting. It is bad enough that people eat meat... Do they have to boil it alive?

ummm...when did anyone ever think that they didn't feel pain? They are living creatures which means they feel pain...and yes I eat boiled lobster and I love it and that won't change. Just seems like they are stating the obvious here.

I'm not eating any more lobsters. Do crabs feel pain too? Oh, shoot. Guess I'll have to give up seafood as well as meat. But darn, I hate vegetables.
