Oxfam Unwrapped works like this - instead of buying unneeded gifts, instead buy something practical to be used in a third world country. Then you tell the person you would have bought the crappy gift for that you've done something good in their name.
And if you're still stuck on the notion of a crappy gift, you can buy a bag of manure.
