Ring bell for Salvation Army, lose bed in homeless shelter

That guy should get a job. It's amazing that he can ring a bell for hours on end but can't do the same working for a salary. Maybe this kick in the butt will make him do better for himself.

So am I to understand that because he is volunteering to ring a bell that the author thinks he should be given shelter and food by an unaffiliated homeless shelter? Maybe they have some space on their couch they could offer him if they really feel so strongly about it. Maybe the salvation army can hook him up with some food and a roof.

I thought the article was basically neutral.

As was said, the place isn't a free hotel.

this man doesn't work.

this man doesn't want to work.

9 months in the shelter and he makes no move to improve himself

48 years old and has done nothing to improve his situation because there is always someone willing to give him a handout.

It isn't like he is a man who is down on his luck. This is one of the vast numbers of homeless people who do not want to have a home that they have to pay for.

He isn't volunteering , they only call it that so that they can get away with illegally paying their employees less than minimum wage)

It is harsh, but it does make sense that the shelter feels if he can work 10 hours at $2/hour, he could get a job and pay rent at a place.

If you have the ability to ring a bell continuously for 10 hours, you have the ability(at least physically) to run a drill press for 4 to 5 times the pay and better working conditions. People like this are stealing from those who honestly can't get their lives in order and I find it very hard to sympathize with them.

I've been in the unfortunate position of waiting at the unemployment office waiting for the days postings and literally racing people to potential jobs. I was shoved out of door ways of people trying to be first with their application.

sometimes it *is* hard to find good work.

sometimes.

That is true. If he was a recent guest of this place, I would hope that he would be given a break and allowed to work for the SA. However after 9 freaking months, he obviously has no, had no, and will never have any desire to better himself. He is quite content to just get by on handouts.

I am saying that all he wants is hand-outs. He doesn't want to work.

As is obvious if he can work 10 hours ringing a bell, he can work at a job paying him a legal wage.

He has spent 9 months in this particular shelter and has never really had a job for long.

Whether ringing a bell for $2/hour is a hand-out or not is immaterial. He still doesn't want to improve himself. He is content with whatever people will give him. Such an attitude has worked for him for decades.

As misswinkle stated, if more people treated him as this shelter did, maybe he would break down and get a job.

Point made. I suppose having been a hairs breath away from being homeless at one point in my life I hate to see people turned out. Maybe TSA could hire him on. That would be "doing the most good" :)
