Aliens Apart
Aliens Apart
For years scientists have wrestled with a puzzling fact: The universe appears to be remarkably suited for life. Its physical properties are finely tuned to permit our existence. Stars, planets and the kind of sticky chemistry that produces fish, ferns and folks wouldn't be possible if some of the cosmic constants were only slightly different. Well, there's another property of the universe that's equally noteworthy: It's set up in a way that keeps everyone isolated. picked by AutumnLotus 9 months ago

In other words, aliens won't be getting in one another's face.
... or in ours. Which is a very good thing, we'd like to stuff up our planet ourselves, without alien intervention, please.

That also means that we're only sapposed to have one rock. A wake up call for those who think we can escape this planet if we run out of resources.

Edit to add- This was a very interested read. I kindof got the feel as if we did find a way to travel so far and meet aliens at all, we would be wise enough to know how to handle the situation

How is this puzzling? If it were not the case, we wouldn't be here to remark on how jolly good it is of the universe to be so accomodating.

Edit--sorry for the bold...

Yes, exactly, if some cosmic parameters were only slightly different, then we could not exist as we do now. So.. I guess we would have been different then, but probably asking the same question, hehheh.

Actually, we have about 4 or 5 rocks(a couple of planets and 2 or 3 moons), but only one that can naturally sustain us. We should take care of this one, though, because it is the only one that we can easily call home.

It may be difficult for us to believe it now (since we are limited to such short lives) but I'm convinced that we humans will end up living on some of those other rocks too, although it will take probably hundreds of years to even get it started.
Why?
For the same reasons that people walked from Africa to Europe, sailed from Europe to the Americas, sailed around the Pacific and Indian Oceans to find new islands, etc.

This is only assuming faster than light travel is never invented.

For the foreseeable future that's quite a safe bet, but never say never...

This is not necessarily true for the entire universe. There are star clusters that are close together - relatively (pun intended) of course. They may each have civilizations. Also who is to say that any random solar system has only ONE planet that can sustain life?

Just because a fact is true for us, does not make it true universally. We may be in the very very unfortunate position of being the "smelly nerdy kid" of the universe...alone and out of touch with the rest of life out there with no way for anyone who is cool to contact us.

Can you imagine a host of civilizations in a cluster that KNOWS we are alive and technologically aware from our transmissions, but just too damn far away to reach? Better to not EVER answer them and let them all keep on living thinking they are alone rather than send a message that basically says "Sorry, we can't come to the phone"

That would really really really suck. My God, I am so freaking depressed now.
