Dorie Miller
Doris "Dorie" Miller (Oct. 12, 1919 – Nov. 24, 1943) was an African American cook in the US Navy and a hero during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was the first African American to be awarded the Navy Cross, the second highest honor that can be awarded by the US Navy, after the Medal of Honor. More here.

I'm pretty sure you're mixing him up with Cuba Gooding Jr. I'm pretty sure that I learned somewhere that he was the first African American to be awarded the Navy Cross...
