Can moonbeams cure what ails you?
Can moonbeams cure what ails you?
A giant wall of mirrors in Arizona, US, is being billed as the world's first moonbeam collector. The moonlight, which is of course just sunlight reflected off the Moon's surface, "might have applications for medicine, industry and agriculture", according to a Reuters story that quotes a married couple who have spent $2 million building it. picked by AutumnLotus 10 months ago

I think it's about time I dub the creek in front of my house as having mystical powers of health restoration and invigoration. It will make your love life better, it will put the spring in your step, it will make your hair shiny and restore your vitality. Yes, yes it will. I won't sell you this but I'm accepting donations of $5.00 per 8 oz. jar.

While I accept that these people built this with their own money and don't make such claims (nor do they ask for money to see/enjoy/use it, they "just" accept donations of $10...a specific amount?) they realize that if you put some "new-age" type structure or symbol up, people looking for solace or miracles or help, or any number of reliefs from their predicaments, are going to come to it.

How come we never see Stephen Hawking at these things? I'll tell you why, he has a clue.

Coincidentally, I just finished reading "Stephen Hawking - Quest for a Theory of Everything", by Kitty Ferguson, today. Not only a very good and quite simple explanation of matters physical (spacetime, black holes, quantum theory, gravity, etc.), but also a reminder of the qualities of the man himself. A lesson for us all, I think.

(And no comment about new-age energies from moonlight.)

15 miles west of Tucson? This thing is a big waste of money but I might as well go visit considering it's free, close to my house, and actually looks kind of cool.

So much work has focused on the Sun. We have just forgotten about this great object that has been here for billions of years, has affected us in all forms of our evolution," said Richard Chapin, a businessman and inventor behind the project. "If it could affect plants and animals ... I thought, 'what could the amplification of that light do?'"
I guess nobody ever told him that moonlight is just reflected sunlight. Oh dear.

Can I carry these moonbeams home in a jar?
Will they let me swing from a star?

It's in the Sonoran Desert. His wheels get stuck in the rocks.

Actually, they're as bad as you'd expect, real quack-jobs. I don't know why NewScientist was so kind. For a treat, go to their site and see what a rinky dink thing this really is in comparison to the impressive looking picture in the story. It looks like a drive-in movie screen in a state of near collapse. Two million bucks, eh? Their QUACK FAQ is enlightening on that subject, at least.

And don't forget to buy some moon jewelry while you're there.
