Make a call tommorrow to save America's Horses!
Mark your calendars for January 22, 2008, the National Call-In Day for Horses!

The doors on the last remaining U.S.-based horse slaughter plants have been shuttered. Now, Congress must pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) to end the transport to slaughter of American horses to Mexico and Canada. Even when plants were operating within the U.S., several thousand horses were exported to Mexico and Canada annually. Though the total number of American horses killed has dropped, all of them are now enduring terribly long trips over the border that end in a grisly form of slaughter. We have said all along that we must pass federal legislation to stop horse slaughter and the need has never been more urgent.

On January 22, please call your two U.S. senators and U.S. representative and express your support to end horse slaughter permanently. picked by TraumaMamma 9 months ago

« TraumaMamma : Just wondering if you hold the same thoughts to dogs and cats as well?
Yes, actually. That is why I am a vegetarian. I think it is stupid to kill any animal for something as trivial as taste.

To get back on topic....because these are not animals that WE eat over here in the USA. These are pets, racehorses that never made enough money or quit making money, and childhood ponies etc.

These animals are taken to auction by owners who have no idea that another owner is not going to buy their horse and use it for what is intended IN the USA. A pet, A showhorse, A 4H project. Alot of owners wouldn't drop off their horses if they knew what really happened. Enduring a long trailer ride to Mexico or Canada.
So? How do you think pigs feel being locked up in cages their entire lives without any chance of social interaction. (pigs are just as social and intelligent as dogs BTW) Who are we to say which animal deserves to be treated cruelly? Just because they don't play fetch doesn't means they do not deserve to be treated humanly?

The facts from the Humane Society. Perhaps I can encourage you to watch the video on the right as well. Then, let's talk!

Horse transportation and Slaughter

People don't see the atrocities that go on and refuse to watch was is documented.

If more people would SEE first hand what ANY any goes thru and the callousness of how we do it, maybe more WOULD care.

But it's far easier to not watch it.
The same could be said of any factory farm

I am not debating to you, my dear that ANY animal is less worthy than a horse of being treated fairly and humanely.I hate factory farms.

But we do not eat horsemeat in the US. I do not want to sell my kids PET to a person misrepresenting themselves so that it ends up on a dinner plate. That happens every day.

In Korea, they believe if an animal suffers the meat is more tender due to the adrenaline and the fear. So BOY do they suffer. They hang them and skin them alive. Dogs and cats.

Maybe you haven't heard how I try to be responsible. I hunt and am responsible for what goes on my plate. At least the game had a good life before I happened into their world and take great pride in a clean, humane kill. I don't trophy hunt, I could care less about something to hang on the wall.

I shop at a local butcher who raises and butchers his animals in a way that respects the animals in life and death. I eat alot more soy and veggies than anything.

Last time I had a steak was last February at a our firefighters steak fry and THEY buy their steaks from the same butcher.

If you cannot cover the cost of a horse (BIG expense) do not have one. It doesn't cost an arm and a leg to put a horse down, I worked for a vet. Most will take payments as well.

We had to put our 47 yr old pony down and it cost 100.00 for the injection and 40 for the vet call.

We even buried him on our property. Rented a backhoe for 50 bucks an hr and got some other property work done IN that hour as well.

Got a gun? Renderers will shoot them for you and charge you 35 bucks to haul it.

PA but you get my drift

If you cannot afford that, you shouldn't have a horse at all. I realize that people suck.

So, my hope is at least these unwanted horses will be shot and rendered rather than hauled to meet the puntilla knife in between their ears after a horrific trailer ride.

That IS better.

For this you have my respect. It is people like my mother that bother me when it comes to this sort of thing. She refuses to believe that factory farms exists, and when she is confronted with the truth she still will not buy from local farms because they charge a couple bucks more.

She is also the same person that raises hell when any domesticated pet is harmed in anyway -_-

I usually just assume that people who complain about pets being mistreated are generally the same people that don't care if the same thing happens to farm animals.

Not all of us darlin! I do care.

I got into a huge arguement with a coworker over chickens the other day. He said...."who cares how they are treated, they are gonna end up on your dinner plate anyways!"

I busted a spring on him.

In a nutshell, I said he SHOULD care, as no animal lays down willingly to be your dinner. Their lives are miserable, cramped and painful. They deserve a good life while they are here.

Everything does.
