NY's 16-Mile Car Tunnel Would Be Longest
NY's 16-Mile Car Tunnel Would Be Longest
The cost is estimated at $10 billion _ and it wouldn't cost taxpayers a dime. A developer wants to build the tunnel with private money, recouping his costs by charging drivers $25 each way and by selling advertising. picked by dollyllama 12 months ago

That's one ambitious project. I can see why Westchester officials would be concerned.

Why not just add ferry service? Charge whatever to transport your car, minimal impact on environment and faster to implement.

I really wonder how big an impact the extra cars would make. They are already getting into the county via alternative routes.

That's what the builder says, this is just an alternate means to get there faster, I think it might take some of the burden and congestion off the routes. He also argues (and I see his point) that it cuts down on the current environmental impact by cutting down on the time it takes to get there.

I also see how this would stimulate the economy in the region and think it would be great, plus it wouldn't cost the taxpayers. I don't see this as a negative, maybe I'm missing something.

I like the idea that it would be with private funds.

It's frustrating to try to get to "New England"/Westchester from Long Island. It just sounds like the project would take a long time to implement. Ferry service would be very easy to start from Nassau county, provided there is ample parking...public transportation access...etc. etc.

It's frustrating to get anywhere from LI or to get to LI from anywhere. I think it's a great project and it could be conjoined with Ferry Service, but Ferries are much slower and inherently more risky.

Rye is a pretty wealthy town. Arriving at their waterfront with the intent of driving through Rye to other destinations certainly raises concerns for the Rye residents.

There would be a huge impact from 6 lanes of traffic landing at their shore. No matter who provides the money for all the road building aquiring the land would be next to impossible at any reasonable price, assuming there would be enough willing sellers to begin with.
