Motorists drive by as woman is sexually assaulted in the middle of a busy road
Motorists drive by as woman is sexually assaulted in the middle of a busy road
As she struggled with the brutal attacker trying to rape her, the terrified victim might have hoped that help was only a few feet away. The 20-year-old woman had been pinned to the ground on a road which, even though it was 1am, was well lit and busy. Yet not one of the passing motorists stopped to go to her aid. picked by AutumnLotus 2 years ago

That is horrible, but I wonder what did the drivers see as they drove past at 60 mph/96 kmh ?

They probably had a 1/2 second to see. I imagine some might have slowed down to see what was going on.

It could be possible that most didn't think it was rape due to the extreme brevity of their viewing window and the fact that few could imagine someone raping a person on a busy street.

The motorists were probably more pissed off at people having sex in the road creating a traffic hazard. They probably... well make the possibly didn't have any idea that is was rape. There just wasn't time to make a full assessment.

That is of course just a possibility. It could be a sick matter of not wanting to get involved.

I agree with 2many,it's possible it wasn't clear it was rape - it's often hard to determine that as an outside observer and whatever the videos say, no one wants to be the jackass who interrupts sex.

It's the responsibility of any and all to stop a rape if they can, I feel especially strongly about this because so many of my female friends and girlfriends have been assaulted. This is the one thing that would make me seriously injure someone who could not defend themself. If anyone tries to rape one of my friends, they are going to have broken bones when I find out about it.

If you see people on the ground...you stop! That's it. This makes me sick.

Many people don't take seriously to things they see these days apparently. 'Busy' motorists wouldn't dream of stopping 2 seconds to make sure an incident was happening -- no thats far too much of a timesink..geez.

When she fought back he punched her in the face repeatedly before ripping her clothes off and sexually assaulting her on the busy road.
I'd stop if I saw something like this happen on or near a road. I'm a fairly small person, so while I doubt I'd get out of my vehicle to do something, I'd definitely pull over a short distance away and phone the police, staying there until they arrived if my own safety didn't feel compromised.

I could not imagine just driving by!! Even if I thought it was just consensual sex on the middle of the freaking road, I'd call the police - dangerous and kind of disgusting to the onlooker...

I've helped people in accidents/ditches before, and even if it's a non-light road on the darkest of nights and I'm doing 100 km/h, I've still noticed the accident or that something was amiss.

I probably wouldn't get out of the car but I would at least stop with my flashers on, and honk at the guy while callin the police... if he didn't look super strong or armed I might get out and beat him with a baseball bat (always have one in the car) I figure an average guy can't rape two chicks..

Of course this is assuming she wasn't tiny and frail, and would actualy be physically helpful. I am not a weak person and not afraid of conflict, I am also not stupid enough to take risks.

At 1 am...I dunno what I would do. Rationalizing the familiar is a lot easier than I would like to think. I wish that they had at least called the police.

All I can imagine is that I listen to the article stop start honking my horn and flashing my lights at some steroid popping guy until he starts to charge my car in a fit of rage, as his clothes rip off and he turns all huge and green like the hulk, and as I hit him with my car "to do the right thing" I end up in jail for vehicular manslaughter because it was some prank that was going to be on just for laughs gags. Ok so I exaggerated a little there but you get the point.

On the other hand there is no harm in calling the police to report it, and I would imagine a rational person would do at least that. Makes you wonder how many of the drivers of the cars may have had a drink or two and were worried about that instead.

I think a lot of situations like these are caused by bystander-apathy
That said I'd like to think I'd stop and help but then I'm a fairly fit,big-built guy and aren't too phased by confrontation.

I had a couple of friends who, several years ago came across a guy beating and raping a woman and unfortunately for him they are ex-forces and gave him a non-verbal "telling-off".

I spend much of my time waiting for a truly righteous moment to physically assault someone...

I have never had the pleasure of encountering such a situation...I am pissed these folks did not jump at the opportunity.
