I have never had complaints from neighbours over the behaviour of my cat. Most of my neighbours themselves have cats, and I find it amazing how they see their own back yard as their teritory, an are slow to wander. As my cat is getting old, and having a few problems with her teeth, she tends to spend more time indoors now. But this is her choice. I don't make her stay indoors, and I don't force her out. She can come and go as she pleases. I'm sorry some irresponsible cat owners have sullied your view of indoor/outdoor cats, but maybe it was the owners you should blame, not the cats? My cat has plenty places in our garden to use for her toilet, digging holes in the soil, and covering it over after. If a neighbour had complained she was coming into their garden I would have given them tips to discourage cats.
You say you can't compare a cage to a house and yard? I was only comparing it to a house. As indoor cats don't see the yard. Taking cats for walks sits uncomfortably with me. They are not dogs, and shouldn't be treated as such. Dogs enjoy being with the pack on a walk, and are happy to have a leader dictating where they should go. Cats are independant and I can't imagine them acting out normal behaviours on a leash.
I live in the country side now, and most people here have a lot of pets. On my drives home from work late at night, I see a lot cats, rabbits, foxes and badgers. Yet the carcasses I see are mostly Rabbits. Yesterday their was a badger on the road. Should we round them all up and put them in a zoo and take them for walks? Because it's selfish to let them roam and they could die on the road?

gammerus @ 2/15/2008 1:28:45 AM

« Marz : My cat is almost 10 now, and has lived with a road in front and fields behind.
More accuratly, Outdoor cats live to be about five. But this is not only due to being hit by cars, this is due to fights, catching illnesses and viruses. Your cat can be innoculated against most infections and virsus, and rarely die from fights unless wounds are left untreated. Indoor only cats live very odd lives. Often unable to express themelves which leads to stange unnatural behaviour. Whilst it may be suitable sometimes, it's not really the best option. Can you say you'd rather live 12 or 13 years in a small cage, or 4 or 5 doing as you pleased, living a normal life?
a house and a yard are not exactly comparable to a cage, especially if you take your cats for walks. you are lucky to have an older cat, I know many are not so fortunate.. in fact I have had a few cats die at the hand of my dog buddy (r.i.p.) because they jumped into my backyard. I used to bicycle to school everyday and I really don't want to think about all of the dead carcasses that I have seen during the trip.

Even if you don't think your cat is at risk it is pretty selfish to let your cat roam and destroy other peoples property. My boyfriend lemon tree recently died because every cat in the neighborhood seemed to believe it was their personal catbox... and lets not even get into public playgrounds.

digitalgimpling @ 2/14/2008 8:38:40 PM

He's soooo kyoot. but eventually he'll grow into this:

http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/6208/evilseal740588uc0.jpg

Marz @ 2/14/2008 8:09:55 PM

« gammerus : those natural instincts get them run over by cars.
