You're making a huge leap to think she was asking for more than that. It's very likely that that was exactly the compensation she was looking for. It's what I would expect. Where in the article does it say that she wanted more compensation than that? I guess that I'm surprised by your attack of the aggreived patron. You don't usually make your opinions based on assumptions that you've read into a story. Could your assumptions be correct? Possibly. I just didn't see anything out of order in the article.To me it is incredibly obvious that she expects more compensation than the free meal the group was offered. Perhaps I am wrong, but I really doubt it.

I will accept that because it doesn't explicitly state that to be the case, it is possible that I misinterpreted it. However, it is far from being a "huge leap" that is a very likely scenario from the known data.

Also the lengthy wait for a table and her order has zero to do with the wait person, so the 10% service fee means nothing, assuming that goes to the wait staff, or assuming it isn't some sort of standard add-on for restaurants.

Fine, get a free meal out of it. Get reimbursed for the meal if you already paid instead of an offer for a second meal. That should be the extent of any "compensation"

After re-reading I am 100% confident that she does expect to turn this into some sort of windfall.

She tells the newspaper that she expects compensation.
The restaurant owner tells the newspaper that he offered them a free meal.

It isn't as clear when he offered to donate the price of their first meal to charity. It could have been earlier or it could have been after speaking with the newspaper.

I will say he probably should have offered to reimburse them for their meal instead of giving a free one. Assuming they paid the first time.

It isn't clear when they saw the bill. Did they notice the phrase before they paid or not till after they left. Most importantly, compensated? For what? What damages did you receive? None. Nada. Go away.

Also, she complained about service. It seems to me that her complaints were pretty much groundless. Long wait times for a seat and a meal is very common at restaurants. One reason I rarely go out to eat.

I would bet money that their complaints were less than civil. It is extremely likely that at least one of the 10 used some sort of expletive when complaining so the "compensation" can just be zero'd out.
