An automated external defibrillator delivers an electric shock to try to restore a normal heart rhythm if a particular type of irregular heart beat is detected. The machines cannot help in all cases.

Wilson and Shulkin said the defibrillator indicated Desir's heartbeat was too weak for the unit to work. Shulkin declined to provide additional detail, out of concern for Desir's family.


As I said....John Q public thinks if you are down and get hooked up to an AED you are gonna get shocked. Just ain't so. There are MANY other heart rhythms other than the shockable TWO the AED will deliver 200 joules for.

Flight attendants have the ability to give an oxygen tank for certain reasons, none of the above qualify. There are reasons why a diabetic would need oxygen such as Ketoacedosis (sp?) which is a case where the blood sugar has gone so high that the ph levels of the blood begin breaking down oxygen in the lungs and the patient will start breathing heavily to replace it. Diabetics don't need oxygen, they need Insulin in order to lower the blood sugar and stabilize the ph levels, oxygen will help in the meantime but this is at blood glucose levels of 500+. The Normal is 90-120.

Had she said that she had some type of breathing disorder, oxygen would have come. When the attendants heard her say that, they came and gave not one but TWO tanks.

And the Defib machine (as trauma pointed out) doesn't guarantee that it will give a shock and perform a lifesaving miracle.. It could kill people if it just dropped a large voltage without checking for conditions first.

The attendants and machinery seems to be not at fault here, the problem was that a sick woman died. Heart conditions, breathing problems, and diabetic complications, don't hop a plane and then blame the plane's stewardesses for not being able to save you.
