Global...Cooling
The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to wipe out most of the warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year's time. For all four sources, it's the single fastest temperature change ever recorded, either up or down. picked by Hoosker 2 years ago

I thought you were being clever. But I'm glad you weren't. That was interesting.

So if it's global cooling, we'll be faced with famine. And if it's global warming, we'll be faced with famine.

Either way it looks like we're screwed. Hope they get around to cloning our foods en masse.

Wait, this "article" is from a one Michael Asher's blog.

Who is he and why should I believe anything he says?

This may explain it (if you can read scientese)

In any event:

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

I knew it! Something as complicated as the climate can't be explained by something as simple as "hold everything constant, add co2, earth gets warmer". Other things are going on.

/satisfaction

That said, Don't pollute!

This actually brings up a somewhat philosophical question: Are complex systems deterministically chaotic in nature or are they truly random? Do the truly random quantum interactions have macroscopic, observable effects or does the aggregate nature of their random behaviour cancel out - leading to a macroscopically deterministic universe and a microscopically random one?

I think the bigger issue that climate change IS happening. Is it happening outside of normal parameters? Hard to say.

Big words are scary, but I'm sure chaos theory talks about it.

As for the simplified model of "add CO2" etc. I would be willing to assume that climatologists have not overlooked it, and have even incorporated it into their models. A lot of climatologists don't want this to happen just as much as everyone else.

As for this article specifically, while it is very interesting, one should remember that climate is different than weather, and they have still very much just described climate change.

In the words of Kenneth Tapping, the scientist referenced in the article:

It is the opinion of scientists, including me, that global warming is a major issue, and that it might be too late to do anything about it already. If there is a cooling due to the solar activity cycle laying off for a bit, then the a period of solar cooling could be a much-needed respite giving us more time to attack the problem of greenhouse gases, with the caveat that if we do not, things will be far worse when things turn on again after a few decades. However, once again it is early days and we cannot at the moment conclude there is another minimum started.

My thoughts precisely!

Sure, this year might be a cold one; fluctuations are very normal. The overall trend is still warming, though.

And then he says "But now, that evidence has been supplanted by hard scientific fact. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously."

From this "blogger's" source:

The website DailyTech has an article citing this blog entry as a reference, and their story got picked up by the Drudge report, resulting in a wide distribution. In the DailyTech article there is a paragraph:

“Anthony Watts compiled the results of all the sources. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C — a value large enough to erase nearly all the global warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year time. For all sources, it’s the single fastest temperature change ever recorded, either up or down.”

I wish to state for the record, that this statement is not mine: “–a value large enough to erase nearly all the global warming recorded over the past 100 years”

There has been no “erasure”. This is an anomaly with a large magnitude, and it coincides with other anecdotal weather evidence. It is curious, it is unusual, it is large, it is unexpected, but it does not “erase” anything. I suggested a correction to DailyTech and they have graciously complied.

Nice to see the Drudge Report, and Plime apparently, using bloggers for news sources now.

No, you certainly can post from blogs, but I'd be careful when passing them off as actual news.

You and this Michael guy both stated that this year's cooling has wiped out most of the warming that has happened over the last 100 years, and his source said, No, this isn't what I'm saying. He even thought DailyTech had corrected this, but it appears they just put it in bold, as the opening statement.

Hoosker, honestly, I think you are one of the coolest Plimates around, but I'm pretty sure I could find a blogger saying something sensational towards global warming being real and passing it off as news. Would you believe it?
