The true (economic) cost of (the Iraq) war
The true (economic) cost of (the Iraq) war
I'm by no means ignoring or diminishing the human cost of this war, but this article has brought home to me the incredible economic cost of the war. It was perhaps very difficult to estimate better beforehand, but it amazes me that the ongoing costs are so obfuscated (hidden?) today. A long article, but it reads quite well. picked by rambler 6 months ago

Here's a part that I particularly like:
As Stiglitz and Bilmes put it, "Money spent on armaments is money poured down the drain"; far better to invest in education, infrastructure, research, health, and reap the rewards in the long term. But any idea that war can be divorced from the economy is also naive.
In my view you would need some really special arguments to counter those reasons to decide that a war is necessary somewhere...!

In total agreement. Eisenhower warned of the military industrial complex and he was proved to be absolutely correct.

When you invest more than the next two or three countries combined in military/armament expenditures you sure as hell will want to use them....and we usually do.
