Is there truth to the five second rule?
You, or someone you know, is a strong believer in the five second rule. The theory is that food dropped on the floor and picked up in five seconds (or less) has not been on the ground long enough for bacteria to accumulate. picked by dOntEAtpOOp 5 months ago

And to think of all the stuff I've thrown away. Ugh! Fortunately, my personal convictions don't allow me to enforce ANY rule on chocolate. Chocolate is good even after 72 hours on the floor of a bus station bathroom.

This reminds me of the time that I went to a department store and stopped at the gumball machine. I put the quarter in and turned the knob, and that damn gumball rolled across the dirty filthy floor. I scooped down before a crowd of people, picked it up and popped it in my mouth.

The crowd was shocked, all of them with their jaws dropped open. Some of them actually stopped walking and just stood there staring at me like I was completely insane.

I left them alone in the awkwardness and chewed happily at my gumball. It was a blue one.

lawl. I'm with you on that one but things like buttered bread and more flat items of food are gonna pick up hair and whatever craps on the floor so I'd prolly throw that away but round items aren't going to come into contact with the floor as much if you drop them and are therefore fair game for the "Pick up 'n' eat" rule.

So you're saying it's "OK" to eat poop as long as it hasn't been on the floor longer than 5 seconds?


The "MythBusters" did a show on the 5 second rule and "busted" the myth. It showed that the "amount of contact time" on the floor was not really a significant factor. It had more to do with the moistness and type of food.

I don't think they found that you could leave it there for 30 seconds like these folks. If it's on the ground that long - keep walking!

My mom was in the disgusting bathroom at a drive in, and some lady's bridge (dentures) somehow popped out and rolled across the floor. They waited in the bathroom until the chick came out of the stall, picked them up, stuffed them right back in her mouth and walked out. No joke.

I'm a firm believer in being exposed to a little bacteria. Hasn't killed me yet... That was a bit much though!

My OCD prevents me from eatings santying off of a freshly cleaned table, let alone a dirty floor.
Also, that's all fine and good that the bacteria can't reach it, but larger things still will...

God I'm pathetic.
