seems like there's been quite a few stories of boyfriends beating and/or killing their girlfriend's children. if i was single with children, that's compulsion enough to stay single for the kids.

Iam torn between what should happen to criminals like this ...If they get life they should be marked for all to know and protected just enough to keep them alive for a very,very long time.

Yes I agree, a very miserable long time.

I wonder why when the man kills a child, he is rightfully vilified and we fantasize about various rude things being done to his entrails while he is kept alive, but when the woman kills her child she is labeled the victim of a mental disorder and we are told to sympathize with her.

I disagree with you. It seems, here at least, that when a girl kills her baby/newborn, she is labelled as a monster and a wreck but when a male does the same he's let off with 'not knowing much better.'

I'm thinking specifically of a 19-year-old girl whose newborn was found in a dumpster and there were protests and letters calling for her to spend life in prison... yet a few days later when a young male shook his son to death (baby also had spiral fractures on the arms), nobody batted an eye. Boys will be boys!

Women are expected to be nurturers, so there is more disgust, repulsion and outrage when one does something like this.

I wonder how long it will take before someone blames this on video games.

I am talking more about the courts than the general public. I should have been clearer. Also I am speaking in general terms, there will of course be individual cases that differ.

um, i'm sorry, but i don't really see where you're coming from, or what i said prompted you to say what you had said ...

on plime, i see the same shocked and violent reactions to articles of biological parents killing children, as i do to articles about non related adults killing children. i haven't seen the sympathy for the biological mother murderer you mentioned. no matter the murderer's relation to the victim, unprovoked murder of a victim of any age shocks and disgusts me, and i hold no sympathy towards the murderer. that seems to be a similar sentiment for many plime commenters.

now that i think about it, it seems like there's not a whole lot of difference between the numbers of relative murders to non-relative murders. but it would be an interesting list of statistics, if an accurate list of them can be made.

For example, if a male lion kills/defeats the dominant male of his pride, he will usually kill any lion cubs sired by the one he defeated.

There have been a huge number of cases some got national attention such as Andrea Yates, many/most others were more local stories.

Although the public and Plimates will call for justice to be served, they are often not treated as harshly by the courts because of such claims as "post partum depression".

Of course it could be that women often get lighter sentences because they really are suffering from a mental disorder, I don't know. Still I can't remember reading about a father or father-figure that got a reduced sentence for something similar.
