It fluctuates in regards to the dollar, but that's because the dollar fluctuates so much.<br/><br/>If you look at gold v. oil and dollar v. oil, gold is extremely stable.<br/><br/>In 1913, $20 would buy you a troy ounce of gold.  Today, a troy ounce of gold costs you over $800.  That means our dollar is worth less than 4% of what it used to.</i></div>Actually gold is very volatile, much more so than the US dollar. That's why the dollar is the accepted world currency and has been for many many years. It's very stable. That only means no significant fluctuation.<br/><br/>Golds value is artificial. The dollar, while not backed by gold, nor are rest of the worlds currencies, is supported by the economy of the US. Our economy is faltering a bit and so the dollar decines in value. However, unless you believe that the US is fatally wounded and will not rebound as it has for it's entire history I wouldn't sell the dollar short. <br/><br/>If you choose to invest in gold as an alternative then you best be on top of the worlds economic news constantly. Whenever the worlds economy perks up gold drops. It has no substantive value except for the emotion of the gold commodity traders. And if you actually own gold and not shares you'll have to pay someone a fee for caretaking or lock it in a closet.<br/><br/>The value of the dollar is not tied into the price of gold at all. Because gold has risen from $20 to over $800 per ounce in 100 years does not indicate that our dollar is 4% of it's 1913 value.<br/><br/>Inflation is a hell of a lot more complicated than the price of any single commodity.<br/><br/>The 100% dollar you seem to be speaking of in 1913 reflected weeks wages of less than $10, price of bread to be 10 cents and you could get a beer and a free lunch for 5 cents. Say for example you have 10 gold bars.  You make 10 pieces of paper , each one representing one gold bar, and you hand it out to ten people saying they can redeem this at anytime for one bar of gold. Each of those pieces of paper is worth 1 gold bar.<br/><br/>But then you decide people aren't using their bills as much, so you decide to make 10 more pieces of paper and give it out to people.  Now you have 20 pieces of paper each representing one gold bar, but you only have 10 gold bars.  This represents inflation, because each piece of paper is now only worth 1/2 bar of gold.<br/><br/>Now we move to the U.S.  Our paper money isn't worth a set amount of gold, because our money has no backing.  So it's almost an extreme inflation that no has noticed until recently as this economic crisis has arisen.  Our money used to be the standard, so it was good.  It no longer is the standard.  So, really, the dollar bill is worth it's weight in paper.<br/><br/>So, now we get to the fake money part.  Fake money is not real money, because it's only representing real money.
