Scientists Flesh Out Plans to Grow (And Sell) Test Tube Meat
Scientists Flesh Out Plans to Grow (And Sell) Test Tube Meat
In five to 10 years, supermarkets might have some new products in the meat counter: packs of vat-grown meat that are cheaper to produce than livestock and have less impact on the environment. picked by JDRucker 1 year ago

Um, no thanks. I'll take my meat formerly alive, thank you.

I think it's a great idea.

Everyone who thinks this is wrong, go drive by a few feedlots and slaughterhouses. Big, gross, inhumane messes. Also, think about twinkies and cool whip. To me, those are just wrong.

Plus, it's nicer to the environment and won't require sections and sections of ranchland.

I'm not a big meat eater, and I'll probably stick to wild meat, but I would definitely eat a test tube steak at least once.

That's funny because it made me think
of it in a way I never have.

Guys and girls, are always making some food concoction as "Fear Factor" gross as possible then getting each other to eat it...but as soon as a scientist makes something it's like "No way I'm eating that crap!"

heh! test tube steak.

yuck. It sounds unappealing to me.
I wonder how PETA feels about it. I however, may turn vegetarian before I have to eat something grown in a petri dish.

Oh come on. It's not like you guys haven't eaten a hot dog. That pretty much says you will eat anything.

I see this as the possible future. We can't substain an evergrowing human population with present means.

I have a friend that is a sociologist working in the meat and agriculture industry. He suggests that when this is realized (he's known about the research for some time), there will be a marked increase in wars and violence around the world. He claims that eating of livestock somehow lets out some of our bloodlust. Have that meat without bloodshed and people may turn on each other. I don't know if I buy it, but it's interesting at least. He lays out the theory much better than I can.

This perfectly explains why all vegetarians and vegans are warmongering violent people!

i don't know about in vitro meat ... my concerns is in nutrition and taste. would it be like "vegetarian hot dogs," that could taste good if it was never called a hot dog? would in vitro meat taste like animal meat, but have less fat and cholesterol? if i could be assured about the nutritional values of it, i'd be up to trying man-made animal products ... though that sounds like an oxymoron.

Theres a similar product going by the name of Quorn. Maybe spirulina, the 'super food' would pass as a similar product too! Quorn is just a giant vat of fungus grown and textured to look like meat...then sold as a substitute.

Applying this conecpt to other eukarya is inevitable! I'm fine with it, since its all the same to me, as long as it tastes nice (and has the added benefit of helping the environment) I'll eat it!

I'm glad they actually gave a time frame, so many articles seem to think revolutionary stuff like this is around the corner! So much for space odyssey 2001!

Imagine selling "grow your own meat" kits next to "grow your own beer" kits...you could grow your own BBQ food and drink for so cheap!

We've basically been living in a dystopian society since before the concept was thought up...

Alright, fine, if you're gonna be depressing about it. But have you read the book? This seems pulled straight from it.

It's on my list of 'to read' literature, so I don't know how close this stuff is.
