Divorce costs popular professor his job at college
At another college, professor Kent Gramm's divorce from his wife of 30 years might be a private matter known only to friends and close colleagues.

But at Wheaton College, the end of the popular English professor's marriage has cost him his job picked by doggylives 5 months ago

But at Wheaton College, the end of the popular English professor's marriage has cost him his job—and sparked a debate about whether a divorce should disqualify a faculty member from teaching there.
To me the debate is moot. He knew and accepted the terms of his employment. He failed to meet the contractual requirements agreed to, requirements that he was fully aware of for 20 years.

How to avoid this problem in the future:

Step 1: Do not work at a religious college with whose employment requirements you do not agree.

Step 2: See step one.

Amen to that!

I was going to work in a group home this yr....Part time to pay towards my college.

When I was filling out the application, there were many morality requirments, very PERSONAL questions, such as if the applicant ever had any prior homosexual experiences and if they did, they could receive counseling from the pastor there, but could not continue in such relationships.

I have never filled out a more disturbing application in my life! There were questions about my marriage, etc!

MY personal life is NO ONES business and doesn't affect how I do my job.

I did walk away. I can't imagine how they get any help there.

Excellent!!!
I don't see why they even made an article out of this.

Really, if I chose to send my children to a school with crazy *ss traditions, I would want to be sure the teachers are as big of a nutcase as I am.
The teacher that lost his job must be exhilarated himself as well. If not, he shouldn't have pretended to be okay with those rules while he watched collegues of his being thrown out for the very same reason for years.

I grew up in churches more strict than that, and I've always known that working for a church or other ministry would have meant having to live pretty much perfectly 24/7. I'm too big a screw-up for that, so I refuse to apply for jobs at churches and other ministries.

I once had a roommate who kept pushing me to go to work for her company. Without giving away too much information, let's just say this organization practically owns the city I'm in. While I lived with her, my own theology started to change away from what her company pushes. Sure, I could have made more money working there, but at the cost of my own conscience. It wouldn't be worth it to gain the bigger paycheck and lose my soul, so to speak.

He worked at the college for 20 years. When he took the position, he probably did not forsee a divorce in his future. As most of us do not, when we get married.

He declined to discuss the details and said "and I also don't want to be in a position of accusing my spouse, so I declined to appeal or discuss the matter in any way with my employer."

To me, he took the high road even though he knew it would cost him his job. Many don't when divorce is the subject. He also declined the year the college said they would give him to find another job.

He doesn't seem bothered by it and knew by the contractual obligations that he would be walking away from his job. It's the media that's made this a big deal.
