Big Brown wins Derby, Eight Belles fatally injured Posted: 4 months ago by Marli
Big Brown is still unbeaten as he wins the Kentucky Derby by 3 lengths.

Eight Belles, the only filly in the field of 20 horses, broke both front ankles after finishing 2nd, and was euthanized on the track.

It doesn't specify the injury in the article, but I'm going by what the track veterinarian said on the telecast.

Edit- It didn't specify the injury. They've updated it.

That sucks.

Ironically, Barbaro's trainer suffered a similar breakdown that Barbaro himself suffered, on one of his horses yesterday. Not sure if they euthanized him at all.

Chelokee won the first "Barbaro Stakes", too. That's just weird...

Still hanging in there.

Shame about the 2 horses euthanized after last week's Rolex race.

The thing about Thoroughbreds is they are all heart and they are bred to run. So even as their body is breaking down, they keep running, which is usually which causes the amount of damage.

A very, very sad day. Again. My stepfather bred and raced horses for many years, although he was not hands on and pretty much just an owner. 3 of my own personal horses were race horses that I turned into show horses.

This is just something you never want to see in person or on television, let alone hear about it.

I grew up on a race horse ranch. I helped retrain the horses that didn't make it at the track, into show and trail horses. It's sad, but not unusual. Many, many horses are injured in the races that occur everywhere else--the only thing that makes this news is that it was the Kentucky Derby.

I think its cool how they get (i cant spell) euthanized on the track. It feels like thats where they would want to go.

I don't know why we still have horse races in America, it just seems like such a barbaric sport. Kinda like the greyhound races

The difference is that those people sign up for it. No one ever asked the horse if he would like to spend his life running around a race track.

I had no idea so many race horses were "put down" due to racing injuries.

More on Eight Belle's end. WARNING Photos of her down.

Makes me wanna cry.

And as a large animal, I wonder what kind of drugs they use to put her down or how they do it?

We used to euthanize horses standing, but she was down and with a huge crowd like that, I have to wonder if paralyics are used to keep her from moving, to save face at the track. Sure, it looks peaceful, as they don't move...but wonder if she still doesn't suffer until the bitter end.

With paralytics, you are fully conscious, but suffocate to death. The only muscle the drug does not paralyze is the heart. You cannot move, blink, make noise, cry, etc.

You cannot breathe, either.

Everyone that I ever interracted with from the various horse racing ranches loves their animals and does everything they can to prevent pain and suffering. Y'all are acting like these horses are abused. Sure, there are unethical people in the industry, but by and large, that isn't the case.

Not to take away from the absolute tragedy of the loss of such a beautiful animal, but...

anyone else think Hillary supporters might have made a bit of a boo-boo so publicly comparing her campaign to Eight Belle being the only filly in the Derby this year before the race was run?

In spite of the sadness, I have to admit I smirked a bit... just a little.

but I'm sick like that.
