I'm a Christian and I fail to see how gays and lesbians harm the "sanctity of marriage." That purity went out the window eons ago. That's odd, but she didn't get pregnant until 17/18 when they got married so perhaps "courting" was going to the malt shop. In any case, it doesn't have any bearing on their fight and what they accomplished

Here is an NPR story about them and their struggle to achieve basic human rights for all of us.

Of course today, the obvious comparison is same-sex marriages that are illegal just as inter-racial ones were illegal just 40 years ago.

People use the same <strike>logic</strike>bigotry, prejudice, and hate to "justify" arbitrarily denying two people the right to marry.

Part of the decision that made such laws illegal was the following:

Marriage is one of the "basic civil rights of man," fundamental to our very existence and survival.... To deny this fundamental freedom on so unsupportable a basis as the racial classifications embodied in these statutes, classifications so directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment, is surely to deprive all the State's citizens of liberty without due process of law. The Fourteenth Amendment requires that the freedom of choice to marry not be restricted by invidious racial discrimination. Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State.
Substitute 'racial' for 'gender' and the quote still holds the same Truth.
