Chef wants to outlaw out-of-season vegetables
Celebrity British chef Gordon Ramsay said restaurants should be fined if they serve locally out-of-season fruit and vegetables.

Apparently stardom has seriously gone to this guy's head. picked by jhordie 2 months ago

Oh I see. I didn't mean to imply that the fruit plate was that much. More that you buy like a steak for 100 and it comes with veg. I know I'm buying the steak, but I still want my broccoli to be better than what I boil up at home.

« coldbladed:All the famous chef's have a restaurant like that. And so do a lot of the not at all famous chefs.

In LA alone:
Average cost $50 - $75 : 103 Restaurants Found
Average cost $75 - $100 : 3 Restaurants Found

There are about 50 that come up for Las Vegas on that same site.
Those prices are for an entire 3 course meal, not just for a fruit plate.

On the other hand concerning $50-$75 fruit plates, wherever they're sold, Barnham was right.

Whoops, too slow.

« unzercharlie : I don't know where the hell you guys are eating that's charging over $50 for a fruit plate but you should go somewhere else.

I agree that restaurants should use fresh local food, not just vegetables. Support your local economy, local farmers. It's cheaper to ship, fresher, and helps out the economy and the environment, why wouldn't you? I'm not sure there should be a law to enforce it, but people should consider this a real option simply for its obvious benefits.

I work part time in a restaurant that gets everything locally and the food is amazing, I'm happy to be a part of a place that's concerned with the environment and the economy on a local scale.
The positive, upbeat attitude in your post made me smile!

I completely agree with you, too. One of my favourite things about summertime here is being able to buy all the fresh fruit and veggies I want at farmer's markets. I like that I'm supporting the local economy.

Don't know how it got narrowed down to a plate of fruit, but I was just pointing out that frozen fruit rarely passes as fresh. You can only get away with it if the fruit is being used in a recipe where it gets cooked or liquefied.

My 2 Cents:

As I think has already been pointed out, fruits and vegetables don't need to be frozen to be out of season.

Frozen vegetables can still be in season.

What he is referring to, perhaps, is fruits and vegetables shipped from other countries.

Perhaps the oranges from Yemen, or the apples from Chile (in the winter).

I partially agree. Fruits and vegetables taste a heck of a lot better when they are locally grown and eaten fresh.

However, for many countries and regions, some fruits are never in season. In Britain, most of Europe, Canada, and Northern USA, there is no such thing as a locally grown citrus fruit.

In most countries, there is no such thing as a local banana.

He must have learned from Gareth Blackstock.

Of course, you have Barnham's word first-hand; you'll find no argument from us newbs. :)
