Most Americans believe the choice to end one's life is a personal decision and that physician-assisted death should be legal, according to a new survey.

Euthanasia is used only when the people is unconscious or extremely suffering with no hope to survive, so what's the sense to live that way ?

Most Americans believe this? I don't believe you! So there!
I disagree anyway. Too many people, I think, would end their lives when they would have otherwise regretted even considering it later on.
[edit]
Sorry I was more thinking of the assisted suicide of healthy people. I still don't agree with medically assisted suicide for myself if I was sick but its gray enough that I'm glad I don't have to make that decision for the courts.

The courts and government should realize they are NOT required to controll every aspect of life. It's none of their business--it's between the person, and their family. Everyone else should just piss off.

If someone is termanilly ill it is inhumane to force them to live out their remaining days in misery. We treat animals better than our fellow humans in this regard.

I just don't get your nation sometimes.
The death penalty is supported by the government, but euthanasia is not.
I think euthanasia should be legal. I don't think we should force anyone with a terminal disease to suffer unnecessarily. If you know that someone's pain will only get worse until his/her painful death, why not give that person the power to take that pain away and leave here on his/her own terms?

Anyone who is against this or suicide in general just thinks that they know more than the person trying to do it. That they know what's better for them. To tell the truth, you might, but it's still their own body, and they should be able to do whatever they damn well please with it.

Don't judge until you've been in a situation to judge. What is the saying? Don't judge until you've walked a mile in someone's shoes.
Well, if someone ends their life you can't walk very far in their figurative shoes, but you get my drift.

« theshirtpocket : I agree. But committing suicide scars a lot more people than just yourself. I think there's a huge difference between "normal" suicides and those that are physician-assisted.
The people I know who committed suicide were young and had long lives ahead of them. Someone opting for a physician-assisted suicide likely has a short, painful and perhaps unconscious life awaiting them. Euthanasia would allow the ill person's family and friends a chance to prepare and say goodbye.
Speaking from experience here, I think that it would be much less painful and scarring to watch someone you love kill his/herself with the aid of a physician than to watch them slowly, painfully fade away and knowing there is nothing you can do to help or comfort him/her.
And now I'm in tears.

I think I know what you're trying to say, but assisted suicide isn't for people who are depressed or are just 'over it', it's for terminally ill people, those who are in a vegetative state, basically, people who no longer have any quality of life. It scars those who love you to watch you suffer too.

« theshirtpocket : I agree. But committing suicide scars a lot more people than just yourself. Everyone dies eventually. Yes, it sucks to lose someone you love to suicide, I've been though it many times, but if someone is old and in bad health, suicide might be the same as putting out of misery.
Everyone dies. If your in pain and your quality of life is null, you should have the right to decide when to die.

I think suicide should be legal as well as assisted suicide for ill people. Anything you do to yourself and hurt no one else doing should be legal. People just need to be educated more accuractley about what the things they do to themselves will result in, and know the risk they take.
but it doesn't really matter that suicide is illegal, only attempted suicide is punishable.

OK, lets think about this economically. Having someone who is terminally ill or in a position where NO HPE is possible costs alot of money to keep them that way, not only on the families but on the taxpayers as well. If a person who is in this postion and wants to die then by all means let them do it with some dignity. People gripe that suicides go to Hell, but in all honesty would ANY god in ANY religion want that person to suffer needlessly if there was a way to end that pain?

The number on the arrow will change, but you don't impact your actual karma at all on your comments. It's possible, however; that others will follow through with some good old fashioned sheep mentality and follow your upvote lead. More likely, however, is that people will be like "Uh, why the heck are you upvoting yourself?"

I took Imnotyoo's quote out of context and focused just on suicide, not euthanasia, which is the subject of the discussion and the article. I apologize. My grandma was in a coma for the last three years of her life, which is hard enough to watch in and of itself, but my grandfather took every hour of every day to attend to her. That was brutal to watch.
To me she died as soon as she got in that coma, and I could not bring myself to cry at her funeral. In cases like this, I wish that she had the opportunity to die with, and I hate saying this, dignity. Even the pain that would have caused my grandfather would have been better than watching his mind and body atrophy with self-imposed social isolation.

My family went through something similar with my dad. It was horrible, and the lingering suffering is much, much worse because you just can't move on. All you can do is watch them wither. And if you DON'T devote yourself to the care--even for a day or two--you feel guilty, particularly if you made 'me' time instead.
