Girl's fear of school costs district thousands
Girl's fear of school costs district thousands
Rebecca Maykish is 17 and dreads school so much that she stopped going regularly.

In fourth grade.

Those days off have come at a price to her school district and the Palmerton taxpayers who support it. Since 2004, the Palmerton Area School Board has authorized payments of more than $45,000 to help Rebecca make up for her missed school days. picked by DerAlt 3 months ago

People choose to be parents. No one is forced to be one.

They get a federal tax break, per child. If they pay state taxes, they often get a state tax break, per child.

If they don't own real property they do not pay school taxes (or they are mitigated and disbursed if they are renters, depending mostly on your landlord).

So all in all, if you have a child, which uses more resources (financial and natural) you are a burden on society and you don't pay your fair share.

And the taxpayers have to pay for a subscription to Seventeen and tuition to the Barbizon School?

I think we should start taxing people fairly for what they use, for what burden they put on society as a whole.

Maybe if we did that people would think twice about having kids and they may certainly think twice about pampering them.

The kid has "school phobia" but attended Barbizon Academy (a school) and a boarding SCHOOL in California. Does this not seem like a selective phobia? The parents said she didn't want to go to school since Kindergarten. It looks almost like the parents bought into it and didn't take responsibility. You love your kids, you support them in all that they do, but you DON'T let them rule over you.

Rebecca says she reads for pleasure, enjoying parodies such as ''Zen of the Zombie,'' a mock self-improvement book. But her writing skills are weak and she can only do basic multiplication and division on downloaded worksheets. She estimates she spends three hours a day learning. Barbara Maykish has opted not to homeschool her, saying she worried that she would not be able to help Rebecca with her math and writing problems.
opted NOT to homeschool her? then why the eff are they getting all that money for bulls**t magazines, and modeling camps?

UNACCEPTABLE.

they need to pay back every dime they've received from the government if they haven't even been able to teach her how to do advanced multiplication and divison.

ugh. disgusting. this is not a "disability." it's a crutch for not having to deal with reality.

This seems like a case of someone that never learned to control their bladder, and is embarrassed to be at school. The money should be payed to her family to continue her education, on the condition that that it also pays for help to move past her phobias.

If not that, the child should be held to state sanctioned standardized tests, and if they cannot meat that level, then they should be required to attend state sanctioned classes.

I understand that aversion therapy is a very effective treatment for phobias.
