There is a part in the book "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" in which an older child is still trying to breast feed and his mom decides to "give him the gussy" to make him stop.

Apparently "the Gussy" involves painting the boob black. This in turn freaked the hell out of the kid next time he went to get some boobage.

Holy Crap! I could not even watch that! I am with you Iny...I am totally creeped out by that. I breastfed oldest til she was 4 months old, and the other two until they were 6-8 months old. I think a year is plenty good. If the kid can lift your shirt and get there by herself it is time to say "The pumps are closed." *shudders*

edit: I just watched the whole thing. O_O Why did I do that?

Somehow I was watching this on youtube yesterday, kinda creeped out. I know the kid wants to, but it is totally going to mess her up, I don't care about higher IQs, at least make her stop at 4/5 max.

Wouldn't be so bad, but did she have to put it on TV? That poor girl is going to have this on youtube for years as a constant reminder of her less than cool years.

The dad gets in on it?!
I started laughing when I found out they named them but when the dad said he gets in on it my mouth dropped. No longer funny. That's just weird. Okay, kind of funny still. I honestly believe that the mother enjoys it so much she doesn't feel she has to deny them. I don't really think she's thinking about how these children are going to be perceived by everyone. Sort of selfish actually.

I don't think they care much about what people think of them. They're that weird, freaky type of hippie.

Extended breastfeeding is good, I think, but not that extended.

I can see the benefits of extending to 2, maybe 3 years old, but 7 and 8? Not so much. To be totally honest, I think she's doing a disservice to the breastfeeding "movement" by being so public about it.

I think the main problem here might be that many people have a hard time discerning between breasts being viewed as a sexual object and body parts that can feed our offsprings and bring comfort and closeness to a mother and child.
Yes, this is most definitely beyond what most would call normal and I can see how some would call it weird but I don't think it is as bad as most of you who have commented.
Is it really going to be that bad for these girls to have this kind of closeness and comfort from their mother for as long as possible?
I am sure that by the time they are in their teens, they will decide to stop.
It is not something that I would do but these are her children and they seem to be pretty well rounded so who am I to say it is wrong?

IMHO, once dad started getting "his share" while she had a baby at the breast, this line was completely blurred. Nursing is for children... once an adult starts taking part, it turns into a fetish.

The girl's comment about once she could make milk she would "suck on my breasts myself" kinda skeeved me out.

I think that's an excellent point, actually. IMO, that is where the root of the problem lies, when people have a problem with breastfeeding, or breastfeeding in public. Not necessarily in this case, though. There is a definite difference between this family, and your average family who chooses extended breastfeeding.
It's not just the age of the kid, or just that her husband, uhh, "partakes", or just the way the children talk about breastfeeding. But all of those put together make this extra weird.

I have tried breast milk when my wife was breastfeeding, just to know what it tastes like, and it is horribble. It doesnt even smell good, I dont know how the kids can eat so much of it. OK, I guess they dont have anything else to eat. It is weird these kids still want it after they can eat regular food. Their mom must cook terribly to choose breast milk over regular food or even as a food supplement.

Ok this woman is totally messed up. I agree that it seems like a sort of fetish for her seeing that she lets her husband in on the action. Now I didn't watch the whole thing because it started to creep me out, but I never saw her say anything about the nutritional value, just that it keeps her close to her children. I breastfed my daughter until she was 8 months (top AND bottom teeth put a quick end to things) but we still do things to stay close. In the mornings (especially weekends) I bring her into our bed and she cuddles up to me and her daddy and we play a little bit before getting up. At night I cuddle with her and read to her and when I put her in her crib we sing a few songs together before I tuck her in. She doesn't have to be attached to me for us to have close comforting time together. I think this mom needs to cut the cord and let her kids grow up. It would be a different matter if she was doing it for the nutritional value, but not to "stay close" to her girls, there are other ways of doing that.
