Well that is messed up, he shouldn't be able to be arrested just for wearing that shirt in public.

Even though that shirt seems to have no basis upon any story about Jesus I have ever heard (except for that one they left out of the bible where he kills someone). I think this would be a more accurate description of the Old Testament God and not Jesus.

"It's fairly common language these days to express sadness, anger or hurt," he said. "It's a degrading word to use and Jesus is anything but that. It's like calling white black."
I can't seem to fathom that response. If we really want a free voice in this world, we need to encourage this kind of behavior to get the point across. If you don't like what their saying...change the channel!

This reminds me strikingly of the band that put out stickers with their name on it, and they happened to get put on a bike, and some people didn't understand folk/punk rock. So what if the band was called "This Bike is a Pipe Bomb".

Still, aren't t-shirts in public spaces considered free speech as long as they aren't a threat or incitement to violence?

Edit: Apparently not in Australia, which I failed to notice.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Why can't people understand that you can dislike what someone says but that doesn't mean that it should be illegal to say it?

I agree, immediately it made me think of an equally auditorily offensive band, A**l C**t. There is very little in the extreme metal/punk genre that I like.

Children of Bodom would be about the only one I can think of, and I'd still prefer that without the singing, the guitars are amazing.

Edit: Hopefully my self censorship on the band name is sufficient. In this case it is a proper noun.

I'm wondering if the reason the chap was arrested was not the slogan but the depiction of the nun masturbating.

This probably would count as obscene material and Australia probably does have laws about distributing and exhibiting obscene material in this manner.

"Teen Arrested For Breaking Law" is not such a good headline though.

However, as a cautionary (and possibly apocryphal) tale, I'd direct Jesus to take heed of the libel case threatened by one time Head of Channel Four Michael Grade against satirist Chris Morris. Frustrated by the attempted interference by Grade on Morris' show Brass Eye, in one episode Morris included a single, brief shot that included the words "Grade is a c**t" on a wall.

For Grade, already angered by Morris' behaviour, this was the final straw and he sought legal advice on whether he could sue for libel.

Hi brief pointed out that under British libel law the obligation is on the plaintiff to satisfactorily disprove the libellous statement. Further, if the attempt failed then the alleged libel could legitimately be used by anyone without recrimination thereafter.

So in summary, had he brought the case, Grade would have had to prove he wasn't a c**t. Further, if he lost then everyone in the land could have referred to him as "Michael Grade, c**t."

Perhaps understandably, he decided not to pursue his case against Morris.

There is wisdom here for Mr Christ if he were contemplating such a course of retribution.
