Obama Clarifies Comments Over Foreign Languages
Obama merely commented about the benefits of Americans learning a second language. A few people took issue with his comments, perhaps they misunderstood or twisted his words. He clarified his comments to show he wasn't some sort of secret anti-english person. picked by BernardBlack 1 month ago

At first, he specified Spanish only. I immediately wondered why not Chinese, French, Hindi or even Russian as well? Those languages would seem to be as important to our foreign affairs as Spanish.

True. But I think it was just the impracticality of naming every language that our trading partners/enemies/allies speak that prompted him to mention Spanish, which was probably the language that happened to be on the tip of his tongue. (Or maybe the fact that a large number of immigrants speak Spanish, and in some American cities Spanish speakers outnumber English speakers, so for a lot of people it would be practical or even essential to learn Spanish. This would never be given as a reason, of course, because then his opponents would call him a bleeding-heart illegal immigrant sympathizer or something. Personally, I don't give a damn what the reason is. I regret that I wasn't educated in a school that required a second language at an early age.)

Hah! McCain has pretty much said the same thing to everyone in Arizona before, the only reason he isn't talking about it now is because he is running as a republican.

But yeah, this whole language divide is rather urksome.
