Though I don't agree with what they're doing, I can understand why.

If prom tickets are cheaper for couples than they are for two singles, why would two good friends not just go together as a "gay couple"? Granted, most kids wouldn't do that, but a signed statement would decrease the cheating. At the same time, those that would cheat to begin with would be the same ones that would have no problem signing a statement saying they were gay even if they weren't.

I think it's stupid.

Two opposite sex friends could easily do that exact same thing, you don't see them making straight students sign saying that they are heterosexual before letting them attend prom together.

Right, but the assumption is there.

I don't agree with it, but that's what they think.

The article seems a little lacking in information. I'm curious as to what reasons the schools would give for that policy. Not that I'd agree with them no matter what reasons they give, as it's idiotic and helps contribute to school bullying, which is already a huge issue.

I took a female friend of mine (who was an underclassman) to my senior prom with me after having taken my idiot of an ex-boyfriend to my junior prom. I had a much better time.

I guess this doesn't have that much to do with the story and I'm basically just thinking out loud. Sorry!

OK, here's my two cents.

Why? It's perfectly possible to be attracted to someone of the same gender and be straight. People are blurring these boundaries all the time, or at least realizing that they don't mean as much as they might have thought they did.

Also, this is fairly stupid. I mean - if this were to happen elsewhere, it'd be a breach of privacy and probably the subject of a lawsuit.
Just because it's a school doesn't make it that grossly different.

I think they aren't doing enough. They shouldn't just make them register for the prom, they should make them register for the entire school year. And then once the school's administrators know who they are, they should let the entire school know. Like post a big list of all of the names. Wait though, that's not convenient, what if you don't know everyone's name? They should make them readily identify themselves, something visual. Maybe with an armband, or something. All of this information is fine and good, but what about for those times when they are off school property, so they should release this list that they have made, like in the local newspaper, or even the internet.

[/show-that-they-are-going-too-far-by-taking-next-steps-down-slippery-slope]

Really, what do they expect to actually do with this? I don't really understand their motivation. Are they trying to make some kind of registration like I was outlining above?

What if you just want to go with your friend and have a good time?

You don't have to go with a member of the opposite sex to have a good time at a school dance.

If I had gone to prom, I would have loved to have gone with my best friend and sat at a table, quietly making fun of our silly classmates who were taking this high school dance so seriously. I wouldn't have wanted to dress up though, so yeah...

Not any that I have easy access to. I am old and went to that prom before the advent of digital cameras. I am also lazy, and have never bothered to scan my old photos. That being said, I recently moved across the country and most of my personal possessions are in storage in South Carolina. Sorry!

I'm embarrassed to read that this has occurred in my own country, which is actually reasonably liberal most of the time.

I don't see how "outing" the four schools involved would harm the students in any way. It's just ridiculous, how are we supposed to show our disapproval to their policy if we don't know the particular schools involved? They should "name and shame" the schools that are effectively naming and shaming the gay students.
