Internet.org paves the way for new domain names Posted: 2 months ago by Moe
Now there will be able to be sites like www.Visit.Paris or www.drink.coke or even www.meditateabout.佛 <-- Buddha written in Chinese.

But don't think you can go out and grab .coke or .!!! or .sex to score some quick cash. It will cost at least $100,000 and you will need to prove a business plan and show technical hardware to support the new domain.

The uninvited guest: Chinese sub pops up in middle of U.S. Navy exercise, leaving military chiefs red-faced Posted: 10 months ago by AutumnLotus
When the U.S. Navy deploys a battle fleet on exercises, it takes the security of its aircraft carriers very seriously indeed. At least a dozen warships provide a physical guard while the technical wizardry of the world's only military superpower offers an invisible shield to detect and deter any intruders. That is the theory. Or, rather, was the theory.

One-Way Trip to Mars Posted: 6 months ago by dollyllama
"Return to Earth from the Martian surface is a daunting technical problem for which current technology offers no obvious solution," he wrote in 2006. "Realistically, there aren’t any schemes based on futuristic technology that are likely to be perfected within the next 20 years. When we eliminate the need to launch off Mars, we remove the mission’s most daunting obstacle."

Flying saucer spotted over Portsmouth (or is it a trick of the light) Posted: 7 months ago by AutumnLotus
A photographer who stopped on a whim to take some pictures at night might have chanced upon a real UFO. Cynics will dismiss the orange-tinged image showing what appears to be a flying saucer as some kind of technical wizardry to trick of the light. But experts are already saying it could really show a UFO in flight above the UK.

Edit: The Daily Mail have pulled the original article so I've changed it for the forum posting they took the story from. Scroll down past the video - that's not what it is.

Fairlight CMI, the great synth of the eighties Posted: 9 months ago by countach
A Fairlight CMI sampling machine would cost you around $30K in the early eighties.

Today, its technical specifications are surpassed by the most cheap internal onboard soundcards, but not its unique sound character, of course.

Nearly most of 80's not-rock hits used it.

Big Brother’s Technical Difficulties Posted: 7 months ago by willster09
The agency that runs the surveillance system said the rate was so slow because of poor wireless connections between the cameras and the servers (they are being upgraded) and a shortage of server space to store videos shot at normal frame rates. A tapped-out budget for routine maintenance seemed likely to add to the problems.

1.7 billion year old "fossil reactor" discovered in Gabon, Africa Posted: 4 weeks ago by meggysue
Who knew that Mother Nature began processing uranium long before man did?

In the 1970's, French physicist Francis Perrin discovered that the uranium mined at the Oklo mine appeared to have already undergone fission. And there's something else amiss: the atomic weight of Oklo mine's samarium, its "nuclear signature," doesn't match the rest of the world's.

This Wikipedia article goes into more technical detail of the phenomena.
