You called the provider and verified service through them? Can you check with another machine?

Yeah, I've checked with other comps in my apartment and it is just my computer that can't get internet. It is something technical on my computer that I can't access.

I have tried two different cards. I just plugged in an ethernet cord, and that doesn't work either. So, its not a hardware issue. There is something wonky with my computer.

I run Avast! and I've scanned with Adaware 2007. I don't either work too well.

Check out SpyBot. It's free...Very good for free ware.

For AV and firewall, I use Kaspersky. It's robust, mostly compatible with Windows silliness (in that Windows recognizes is and so will leave you alone about not using their crap).

Has he tried HiJack this? It's a freeware that can be a lot of help in diagnosing trojans and virii activity.

I have, but not recently. I will have to try it again.

Be extremely careful with Hijack This. It can do a lot of damage. I know you probably know that, but just as a warning.

Can I just get a recap of what you've already done? I just want to be clear - when you say you've formatted your hard drive can I take that to mean you've erased everything and then reinstalled Windows from scratch?

And, assuming that you did do this, which format option did you choose? Quick or normal?

The options that were given me when I reformatted my hard drive were to redo the OS from disk or from the factory... something or other. I chose the "factory" format option, whatever that was. I'm assuming it re-installed the OS from some part of the hard drive. In the end, I don't even know what I did.

Hope that helps. :S

So that's currently our weak point.

We know that the connection is OK because other computers can get on. We know that it's not the wireless adaptor or the network card because we get the same results on different devices.

What this leaves us with is the possibility that the router is blocking access. If it is set to only allow access to known MAC IDs and has somehow lost the details for your wireless adaptor, this is the sort of thing you'd expect to seem.

If you know how to administer your router, have a look at that. If not, let me know the make and model and I'll see if I can knock you up a little guide.

It'd also be worth checking out which service pack you're on - SP1 makes some aspects of networking really quite unpleasant.

So you were able to reformat AND re-install the OS without using a disk?

Is it Vista?

Nope, its XP. I believe that I reformatted AND re-installed without a disk. That means nothing however.

Still pretty impressive. Usually you need to have a disk to reinstall the OS, but I haven't had to do it in years.

Pock is right in that it sounds like your router is blocking access to your MAC address... If you can login to the router from another computer, you might be able to see why the other computer is being denied access to the net.
