Okay, Plimates, I have done my civic duty and searched every inch of this picture for some reflectoporesque image of the elusive Dolly. With Moe and 2many FINALLY posting pictures, I thought perhaps we would get lucky.

do you mean how do you convert .wma to .m4a? i know a program called Audacity; it's a soundfile editor, that'll convert audio files to other types, but i don't know if there's a newer version of it that'll work with .m4a files ...

Arrrgh! Help, Mighty Plimegeeks...

My first attempt at creating a website... While it looks pathetic (you don't think I'd actually link to it, did you?), I did get everything accomplished EXCEPT for one thing:

I need to embed a wav file greeting to play automatically when my home page loads. Fine. Did that. The only problem is every time the visitor returns to the home page from another page the greeting plays again.

Is there a code that will keep this wav file from playing again at every return to the home page?

I'm using Dreamweaver to create this beast if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any help Plimates!!

:)

I'd say you'd need to set a cookie, and then trigger the playback on the presence (or rather absence) of the cookie.

Thanks for the suggestion, Pock! It's a little bit above my skill level right now, I think, but after researching it I do understand cookies better... I think I'll just leave the stupid greeting and the prof can just enjoy my lovely voice every time she hits the home page. Ah, well... :)

In that case how about a good old fashioned web 1.0 landing page with the recording and a "skip" button to take people who have heard it before onto the main page?

(I've just had a horrible vision of the future where the older folks sit around saying "They just don't code websites like they used to.")

Good suggestion! Unfortunately, too late. It was due last night and I just didn't have enough time to mess with it anymore. The prof got what she wanted and never specifically said not to have it play at every home page return. So she gets what she gets... I've got an A in the class anyway so for now I'm just putting this in my folder of stuff I want to figure out when I have time. It's about 3" thick now. haha

Now excuse me, I'm gonna go sit in my rocker and reminisce about the good ol' days of manual typewriters and slide rules. ;)

I seem to have lost some links from my "Submitted" tab. Most of them, as a matter of fact. As well as a ton from my "Commented" tab. Where oh where could they be?

Most likely, these are the older submissions. Best guess if that they were removed during a table cleanup conducted on the server a week or so ago. It's not just you, everyone lost everything more than about 3 months old, I believe.

probably not many geeks can help me with this one, but i don't want to open a new thread for this request.

i want an art program. i suppose the obvious answer would be 'adobe photoshop', but here's my biggest problem: I DON'T HAVE MONEY. i dont' want to bootleg it, so it'll have to be free, preferably no demoware. the gimp is a good suggestion, but i can't understand it, and it seems to focus more on photo editing than painting and illustration. i hear inkscape is great for arting, but that's a vector illustrator; i'm looking at more rastor.

anybody can help me out here?

Chances are...

If you know Photoshop, then your first stop is Gimpshop - it transforms The Gimp into something more Photoshoppy. Although TBH, I've never really thought of them as being that different. But if you think you can do it with Photoshop, you can do it with The Gimp

Otherwise, if you're running Windows, then you might want to try Paint.net.

Let me know if either of those work out for you.

Absolutely ghastly website that contains many freeware (some demoware too) programs to suit your needs.

pocksucket - i am familiar with many of the Adobe programs; i've been using them at school. i'm most familiar with using photoshop and illustrator. i'm downloading the Gimpshop, and i'll give that a shot.

there is an industry-standard program of the type i'm looking for; i think the name of it is Corel Painter. has a strong focus on digital painting and drawing. just i haven't found a paint program that can match it ...

dollyllama - looks to be a good list; i'll muse over it ... but it's real difficult to take the website seriously, as i'm mostly convinced that an 11 year old made it on geocities ...

thanks, fellas. i'll post back when i've found whatever it is i'm looking for. more leads always welcome!

I agree and I have very little talent in the area of painting but I've heard good things about artrage so that one might be worth checking.

It's hard to take anyone using "comic sans" seriously.

i might try making a real drawing next time.
