i don't get why people want an online blog, but want it as private as possible ... why not just write in a paper diary/journal? i have one, and i've found ways to conceal it well enough. also helps that few people (in my family) know it exists, and to those i do, i say that i write in it very personal things that'll greatly embarrass me if it were seen (reverse psychology works around here).

I like the user pics that can go with my mood. I HATE writing and things seem to flow better when I'm typing. Plus, its faster. A written diary is not much safer than one online. Anyone could snatch it up and read it. Also, I get to play with the lj layout!!

I can empathise because my sister and I have spent the last 5-6 years trying to maintain the illusion to our parents that IM just doesn't exist.
My mother-in-law discovered the joys of IM about 6mths ago:( Even worse my wifey gave her my IM ID

have you tried offline typing programs like microsoft word? you can still insert pictures and use graphical layouts (especially if you know HTML and save it as a .htm file). also, you can .zip up the diary entries and password lock it, and stash it in a hidden folder.

i prefer to write in a paper book, as i can't curl up on my bed with my computer.

Possibly because they are attention-seeking extroverts?

What bothers me more is the ones who do blog quite regularly and openly and have absolutely nothing exceptional to say.

I have a little blog, but I use it to keep my family and friends updated about me and my adventures when I'm in the field. I like it because I can update it only when I need/want to, and I can attach pictures to some of the longer stories I've got (like the bear that ripped my tent or the giant lake trout I caught). A few of my friends started these in lieu of sending out mass emails after every crazy or sortof crazy event in the field, and I like it because I personally don't like getting my inbox filled with everyone's insane stories. The blogs are good because I can read through them in some spare time.

I guess since I intend my family and friends to read them (even just on occasion), I keep the content safe.

I have a little purple notebook I keep as a real diary/journal. I'd never want anyone to read that!

i was referring more towards those people don't want anybody at all, or most people, from seeing their personal writing, yet chose to post that writing on journal services that's designed to publish people's entries. to me, that's like renting a bilboard in the center of a busy highway, painting your stuff in it, and then covering the whole thing in tarp.

Actually, I agree with 'Boot here. That is attention-seeking, but it's almost passive-aggressive attention-seeking.

To me, it seems these individuals just want someone to inquire about it.

Its not the same format as lj and why would I do that if I can do it better with lj? Nothing is 100% safe no matter where you do it.

I have it to keep in touch with my friends who are distant, so I expect them to be able to get to it (I have a paper diary too, for the more secrety things). But some things are friend-safe without being mom-safe...

Had a lot of fun though so it's worth it. Back home resting now.

Zach, the doggies, and I are going to be in a commercial for Local Burger, a local restaurant that serves local meat. We were sitting outside with our doggies and the owner asked if we'd like to be in a commercial and we signed a waiver. She gave us free peanut butter balls and a gift card for later. We talked with the people at the table next to us and it was fun. Whee!

It's BEAUTIFUL outside today!!!

I also spent the majority of the day spending my company's money on field gear for our project team. That was fun, and good because I definitely needed new field gear.

Then my walk home was fantastic. There were butterflies everywhere!!
